UK, Netherlands To Connect Grids via Nederwiek 3 Offshore Wind Farm

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

This is the sub-heading.

Dutch Climate and Green Growth Minister Sophie Hermans has included LionLink, said to be the first direct-current hybrid interconnector, in the country’s latest Offshore Wind Energy Development Framework. LionLink will use the offshore grid connection of Nederwiek 3 offshore wind farm in the Netherlands to connect to both the Dutch and the UK onshore high-voltage grids.

These are points from the article.

  • The interconnector can also be used as an additional high-voltage link to exchange electricity between the countries.
  • With LionLink now added to the offshore wind development framework, TenneT may now make investments in the project, which the Dutch transmission system operator (TSO) is realising in close cooperation with UK partner National Grid Ventures (NGV).
  • Nederwiek 3 is planned to be launched in 2026.

The offshore grid between the UK and Europe is on its way.

  1. Can’t understand why Millibrand, Starkie and NESO haven’t promoted this for the N.Sea as a central goal as we never be big exporters of wind output if we rely upon the UK onshore Grid to move the power as it can’t handle whats on offer now. Also dont be seduced by the Eastern Green Links they are a decade too late and wont even neutralise the impact of what has already been built let alone whats due to complete in the next few years in Scotland. Them we have the ScotWind build out to come so this is key.

    • Note that a lot of electricity is converging on Humberside and Drax.

Centrica and SSE are building massive hydrogen storage at Aldbrough and Rough North of Hull.

And the Germans are reaching out to invade Humberside with their massive AquaVentus pipeline to take a lkot of this hydrogen, back to Germany at a price. Aquaventus is also reaching out for hydrogen from Denmark, Norway, Scotland and The Netherlands.

To make matters better for the UK, RWE are building the 3 GW Dogger Bank South wind farm and the three 1.4 GW Norfolk wind farms off Great Yarmouth.

I suspect RWE will put their electrolysers offshore, as the pipes to Germany are shorter that way.

Politicians talk about Northern Powerhouse, but the UK with help from the Germans and the Dutch are building a European Hydrogen Powerhouse in the North Sea.
