Beating IKEA
I ordered two bookcases from IKEA and they came this morning, courtesy of a cheery man from Parcelforce. They are now made up and installed in my living area.
At least they look quite square, even if they don’t match my dresser to their right. But then they were only £80 the pair and they were capable of being put together by a man with only one good hand, dodgy eyesight and not-fully-working brain. It could also be that in the words of the song, I’m getting better all the time.
So perhaps IKEA’s designs are not that bad. I would put in little improvements to the design of these bookcases, but mainly because it is quite easy to confuse which way some of the panels go. I’ve put together quite a lot of flat-pack furniture in my time and compared to the best, this scored about 6 out of 10.
My Noise Meter on a 43 Bus
I’ve just tried out my new noise meter on a 43 bus.
It gave a reading of 57 at idle and 87 when going as fast as traffic allowed on the Holloway Road. I was sitting at the back over the engine.
The bus is probably typical of many in London, but I’ll be trying a few of the more ones in the next few days.
UCL Lunchtime Lectures
I went to one of the UCL lunchtime lectures yesterday on the largest archaeological site in London; the Thames. It is all detailed on this Thames Discovery web site.
Nokia Blows It
I use a Nokia 6310i, as it does everything I want from a mobile phone and more. So where did they all go wrong? As rumours are that they are in serious trouble.
According to this article, they spent too much time in the sauna.
I doubt I’ll ever buy a smart phone, as they just don’t suit my lifestyle. I’m even taking my laptop on trains less, as a magazine or paper and my phone give me all the entertainment I need.
I do wonder sometimes, whether a large part of the population are growing tired of electronic toys. Reality is so much more fun!
