The Anonymous Widower

Death, Taxes and Spam

Benjamin Franklin said that there are only two certainties in life; death and taxes.

Today he would have added spam.

If I look at my unwanted e-mails and remove everything that is obviously crooked, comes from a foreign source or is related to companies I once signed up to, I end up with a surprisingly short list; Rodial and Heaton Wealth Investments.  As I said before, Rodial is a company I have no need for and I find it mildly amusing that they are targetting me. The other company is trying to sell me useless property investments and my financial advisor has told me to steer well clear of them.  As most of the properties they seem to be promoting are from places, I wouldn’t visit, if you paid me, I doubt I’d be pulled in by their charms.

What worries me, is that these companies wouldn’t do it, if it wasn’t profitable for them.  So perhaps there really is one born every minute.

  1. About three years or so ago my email was hacked into. Everybody in my address book recieved an email saying that I was stranded whilst on a business trip to Nigeria, my money, cards etc were stolen and please could they wire me some money, addressed to some intermediary, via Western Union.

I found out about within about 5 minutes – each daughter rang me to tell me. I immediately rang people or emailed people to get the word out it was a scam. One lady I emailed had just been ringing around her family to get the money together to send me, and a man was just finding out how to use Western Union! The fact of it being a scam hadnt occured to them. They both know that I have limited contact with my parents, and probably wouldnt ask them for money, and so werent surprised to be asked!

These were both sensible intelligent people, who know I am disabled, and know I dont fly!

There are some very naive people out there!
