The Anonymous Widower

On Line Grocery Shopping

It was reported today on BBC Breakfast that on-line grocery shopping is not being the great success it should be.

As a widower, who lives alone and who is very computer literate, you’d think I would do a lot of on-line grocery shopping. When my wife was alive, we did quite a bit as we both worked full time and I actually worked at home to take in the deliveries.

Now, I’ve had a serious stroke, can’t drive and have moved to Dalston and although I buy lots of goods like books, furniture and electrical items on the web, I haven’t bought any groceries on-line.

Last week though, I saw the future.  I went to my local Waitrose in Upper Street, did a large shop and then they delivered it an hour or so later.  As I had a job to do at home, it only meant, I had to get the bus home to arrive before the delivery did.

The only problem was the driver had left his pen at the previous delivery. So I gave him one of my many spares.

But it was just so much less hassle than waiting in at home to collect some goods that might be quite not what you want. As after all, I had chosen them in the shop, so if they were wrong, it would have been my fault.

As shopping innovations like this get more common, on-line shopping will continue to lose out.  And in some cases it will replace driving to the supermarket.

  1. I am not an on line grocery shopper either….but it does have its uses.

When I was in plaster with my leg….on the way home from the hospital….I was taken by a friend to the Asda…to stock up on essentials…..food for me…long life milk , kitty food….(given poor Smokie had been outside for a week….and I didnt even know if she was alive….)…loo rolls….

After that…I was on my own..crawling around the house…the on-line Tesco and the Asda on line….were saving graces for me. Without…I would have had all sorts of problems…..

I dont have family nearby….and was on my own. Dont try moving the bin outside to the edge of the pavement…its possible…but only just.. No help from social services as I “was under 55 and didnt qualify” Such situations make for creativity…..

The highlight of the week was the food delivery arriving…..one of them even sorted out Smokies litter tray……

The awful thing is…I live all of 300 yards from the Bakery….and they didnt bother to send as much as a card, or email…or bother to pick up the phone.

    • I don’t get any special help and don’t need it. My wheelie bin sits permanently on the front patio and the bin men take and return it every week.

  2. We used online grocery shopping once only. As I recall, I had just come out of hospital, life was hectic and it seemed like a good idea at the time. But it arrived 4 hours later than planned, and half of it was missing, and in the time we had had to wait for the delievery we could have done several grocery shops in person!

I do buy GF products online, and I buy a lot of other stuff online as well. But not normal food shopping
