The DLR Reaches Stratford International

Today the DLR was opened to Stratford International station. So I went for a ride and took a few pictures.

It is an impressive line.

One thing that it does is to create a step-free route from stations on the North London line to the London City Airport, with a single change at Stratford.

I also joked with one of the staff about tourists coming to Abbey Road station to see the crossing. Nothing surprises her!

  1. Spoilt for choice to get to City Airport now – ELL to Shadwell is the other way.

    • Except that if you have a heavy case you have to hump it up the stairs twice at Shadwell, as the lift is out of action at the moment, as they are widening the staircase. I don’t believe in trundling trailing cases, so I’d go to DJ and then change trains at Highbury and Islington or Canonbury. Not good but until Dalston Kingsland is step-free it’s a simple way.

I actually think the City Airport must be very pleased about the link. It means that all of the lines out to Stratford to Essex now have a quick connection to the airport.

      • I nearly always travel with just a carry-on bag on business as it’s usually just a day trip or one night in the things I do around Europe. Got to go to Trondheim soon – sadly there is not even an Oslo flight from City so it looks like Heathrow or the dreaded Gatwick for me this time.

  2. I went there once via Copenhagen and back via Schipol.

In Trondheim, they have one of the biggest ship testing tanks in the world. During the war the Germans thought it was so important they used it to store butter.
