The Rain Claims a Victim

Tonight, the rain didn’t give up, so I took the bus to Carluccio’s in Upper Street for supper.  In fact I had to go somewhere, as I hadn’t got any supper in because of the rain.

But coming down Essex Road, there had been an accident, and as we passed, I noticed that a motor cycle was on its side and it appeared that a passer-by was giving first aid to the rider.  It looked like a police car had just arrived and they were helping out too.

Hopefully, everything will be alright in the end.

But it is that sort of night, where accidents will happen and you’re much safer in a full-size bus.

  1. I agree about buses, motorcycles and bicycles aren’t safe on busy roads or in bad weather. And I never cease to be amazed at some of the things I see people doing in mobility scooters.

    • You only see the odd mobility scooter in central London. Usually driven responsibly.

  2. You have good public transport, much better than anything here. But I see people in the little fold up type shopper scooters who are far too big for those scooters, driving them along the road!

    • You never see scooters used like that in London. It could be that all buses and taxis are disabled-friendly and anybody who is seriously disabled gets free public transport.

The public transport in Manchester is third-rate compared to London. Buses aren’t disabled-friendly and need to be two exit like London, as it speeds up entry and exit and sorts out the low-life, who intimidate the driver and other passengers. Every bus stop in London is also a comprehensive information point, with maps and a text driven next-bus system, that uses a five digit code for all of London’s bus stops. Manchester buses don’t even have an information point at Piccadilly. Disgrace is a too mild a word for Manchester’s bus system. It’s totally unusable by visitors. Even the trams, which do improve things a bit, are seriously badly managed compared to those in Croydon.

  3. I agree, and bus routes don’t make sense, they don’t connect in sensible places. When my daughter had a music lesson after school less than 5 miles away from school she had to get three buses, despite school and her music teacher’s house both being on main bus routes and within walking distance of rail stations. I couldn’t always arrange to be available to take her.

    • Transport for London is all powerful and controls the various bus companies that actually provide the buses. TfL reports directly ton the Mayor band the GLA. Perhaps the problem with Manchester, where buses seem much worse to Liverpool and Sheffield, is that it doesn’t have an overall controlling council. London of course has the boroughs which sit below the GLA.
