Paying Small Amounts In Restaurants

Yesterday, I was in Carluccio’s in St. Pancras waiting for my train north, when I realised I was running things a bit close.

I had only had a coffee, so I knew it would only be a couple of quid, but I hadn’t had the bill yet.

I was tempted to leave a tenner, with my business card on top and leave, returning when I got back from the north.

But I didn’t as the bill arrived and I paid it in the normal manner.

In some European countries, the bill is always left, so that if you have to go and are paying cash, you can just leave the money and go.

Certainly in some restaurants and cafes, where people might have to leave quickly, it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

  1. One place I go into on a regular basis, they dont do bills at all, they just tell us to pay on the way out! But it is a small place, mainly a coffee shop that does light meals as well. And they know us lot, we are in every Saturday at 10.00 and leave at 10.55 I have no idea at all if they know who we are or where we go afterwards, or why we only ever have tea or coffee.

    • I would do that in my local Carluccio’s and frequently go to the till with my card. But this one was in St. Pancras station and I suspect they’re more worried about runners.

    I have seen a lot of plastic used for amounts less than $5 . . .

    • The problem here wasn’t the amount, but the bill. As I said, in some places in Europe, they bring a small bill to you with the coffee in a small glass dish. When you pay the bill gets torn through. It’s a good efficient system for waiter service for just coffee or a couple of drinks.
