An Ungated Entrance Used To Create Step-Free Access At Crofton Park Station
Crofton Park station is not step-free and has the usual staiircases.
As I passed through today, I noticed that an ungated entrance had been used to create step-free access.
Passengers are expected to touch-in and out on the touch pads.
I suspect most do!
But it’s a clever idea to build an affordable step-free entrance.
I suspect this type of entrance might become more common in the Oyster-card area.
After all, there are several Overground stations without ticket gates.
A number of stations on the newly created Overground gained step free access to at least one platform and sometimes both when Ken Livingstone was Mayor but they were perceived as encouraging fare dodgers when Boris Johnson became Mayor.
At West Croydon Station they overcame this problem by building a new staffed entrance with ticket barriers . A solution that’s OK at busy stations but not at lightly used stations although ironically leaving a gate open is likely to be the only way lightly used stations will get step free access !
