More New Trains On LNER Wish List

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Rail Magazine.

This is the introductory paragraph.

LNER has revealed it is in the market for new trains, despite only just starting to introduce its new Hitachi Azumas.

There would appear to be more work to be done for their original plan of using shortened InterCity 225 sets.

So to be able to fulfil the timetable to be introduced in 2021, LNER need perhaps another six ten-car trains.

Obviously, they would want Hitachi Class 800 trains or Azumas.

Now here’s a twist!

Under EU regulations, it has to be an open competition.

I thought that Boris Johnson had said we were leaving the EU!

  1. Never mind Boris, public procurement should normally be by open competition, unless there are strategic reasons not to (e.g. for defence).

    • I would be very surprised, if new Azumas wren’t the best and most affordable, given that a whole new maintenance and staffing system would be needed, for a small fleet!

      I also think there’s big advantages in making the ECML all similar trains.

  3. Are these 10 cars the fixed composition of 10 cars?
    Or 5 cars plus 5 cars?

    by 2021,
    Kings Cross – Stevenage – Cambridge – Kingsley
    and make IEP happen?

    • There is a Hitachi document on the web, which says that twelve cars are possible and if two twelve-cars are running together in rescue mode, then the computer can work out what it’s got and control the train accordingly.

      Even Class 378 trains seem to work on a plug-and-play basis, as has been well-demonstrated on the Goblin recently.

    • King’s Cross and King’s Lynn would probably be limited to 160 metre long trains, North of Ely. Waterbeach is being upgraded to 240 metres. But could all platforms be this long.

      A six-car Class 801 train would be 156 metres so could run to King’s Lynn. Incidentally, a nine-car Class 801 train would be 234 metres, so would fit a standard BR twelve car platform.

      But this is not an LNER route, so these trains would be Great Northern unless it was transferred. But sensibly it should be run by 125 mph trains, as they are road-blocks on the East Coast Main Line
