Are Fuel Cell Generators The Future For RVs?

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Hydrogen Fuel News.

It surely is an interesting concept to go and explore the great outdoors in a vehicle that pollutes what you are enjoying.

But hydrogen power solves the problem!

  1. It is surprising that few RV’s run their ICE motor on LPG which they carry anyway for cooking and potentially cooling/heating

Bigger RV’s tend to frequent places that have electrical hookup so it is also surprising we haven’t seen EV/Hybrid RV much yet (these might also carry LPG/diesel/kerosene for cooking/heating/cooling).

  2. They could use hydrogen for cooking and heating.

    • The problem with using hydrogen for cooking/refrigeration/heating is the current lack of small scale equipment (for combustion). May be possible electrically via fuel cell but a fair amount of control gear would be needed to run 240V equipment (which could also be connected to campsite hookup).

It will come in time but it is probably a niche requirement so first gen green RV would probably deploy existing cheap, compact LPG solutions (some fridges also run 12V and/or 240V as well as LPG).

  3. As mains gas will go hydrogen in a lot of places, I suspect that hydrogen powered equipment will evolve. Watch the project at Keele University.
