I have a number of old postcards showing the luridly coloured ‘hellish” sunsets behind Hell station. I’ve seen a picture of a ticket from Hell to Paradis, which I believe was a station over the border in Sweden. I forget whether it was single or a return! It’s rather surprising that the NSB hasn’t fully electrified its network, given the country’s enthusiasm for green energy (despite its exploitation of North Sea oil). Steam had finished when I went there in the 70s and 80s, but at that time there were still in daily use some wonderful teak-bodied, clerestory-roofed carriages dating back to the 1920s. Not forgetting the marvellous TF Ammonia, the last steam powered train ferry, which linked the isolated Rjukanbane with the outside world. The RjB was a sort of living museum of elderly railway equipment, like the rare flora and fauna found on isolated islands
