Battery Trains Ordered For Hermann-Hesse-Bahn
The title of this post, is the same as that, of this article on Railway Gazette.
This article is yet another endorsement of battery-electric trains.
There is more about the history of the Hermann-Hesse-Bahn in Wikipedia entry for the Black Forest Railway.
Could the Germans be using a battery-electric railway to bring in the tourists?
Actually it’s to bring in the commuters and schoolchildren. The last section of the route that is part of Stuttgart’s S Bahn network closed 37 years ago and by opening it up again it’ll serve an estimated 2800 people a day who want to get into Stuttgart. There are about a dozen short sections of track that the State Railway business SWEG is considering. seriously for reopening.
The RS1 DMUs they will replace are barely more than 20 years old.
