Blackwall And Silvertown Tunnels: Mayor Proposes Discount For Some Users

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.

This is the sub-heading.

The London mayor has written to the government to say he is considering a low-income residents’ discount for the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels.

These paragraphs outline the story.

Both east London tunnels will have tolls from 2025, although no specific charge has been decided.

Sadiq Khan said the impact on Londoners who might struggle to afford the fees needed to be mitigated.

Mr Khan has asked that any discounts should not affect funding for Transport for London (TfL).

itvX has an article with this title Drivers Could Be Charged £5.25 To Use Blackwall And Silvertown Tunnels, Sadiq Khan Suggests.

My view is that the phrase about a pig and lipstick applies to the Silvertown Tunnel.

  1. Anything they can do to screw money out of motorists they will. If the Rotherhithe tunnel wasn’t so inaccessible a lot of traffic would head there.

  2. Whist ut is usual to impose tolls on estuary crossings that are nearest the sea and / or eliminate ferries (Forth, Severn, Skye, Liverpool tunnels etc.), this is usually only until they are paid for and there is always a lot of pressure to remove tolls.

Slightly unusual to impose a toll where there wasn’t previously one, but there would be added traffic from people avoiding the crossing with one. That said Kahn sees motorists, especial from outside London (they can’t vote him out) as milch cows to milked dry.

  3. The tolls on the Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels might actually discourage those who want to travel regularly under the river to perhaps get to work to use public transport. Unfortunately, except for Ebbsfleet, there is no large parking in South-East London. And Ebbsfleet is only connected to Stratford and St. Pancras.

One of the rail projects that should have been built before the Silvertown Tunnel, is the extension of the Elizabeth Line to Ebbsfleet.
I believe that the Silvertown Tunnel will also be used as a cut-through by heavy vehicles, when the Dartford Crossing is closed. Greenwich, Hackney and Tower Hamlets Councils have been against the tunnel because of the congestion it will cause.

I have a feeling, that the Silvertown Tunnel will become the most hated piece of road in London.
