Searching For The Missing Banksy
I went today to Wood Green to have a look at the place, where the infamous Banksy drawing went missing.
There is a report on the background to the affair on the Standard web site.
This looks like it will develop into a big spat, between everybody concerned with the drawing.
I actually quite liked it and I do feel that Banksy or whoever was the artist, is having a big laugh at the building’s owners, Harringey Council and the Arts establishment.
If you want to go and inspect the site, it’s just a few metres walk down Wood Green High Road towards Wood Green Tube station from Turnpike Lane Tube station.
Labyrinths In The Underground
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, each station is going to get a new artwork from Mark Wallinger. It’s here on the BBC. The first stations were unveiled yesterday.
The first stations to have the design are: Baker Street, Bank, Embankment, Green Park, King’s Cross St Pancras, Oxford Circus, St James’s Park, Tottenham Court Road, Victoria and Westminster.
I shall check them out today.
- Baker Street – 58
- Bank – 142
- Embankment – 63
- Green Park – 232
- Kings Cross St. Pancras – 172
- Oxford Circus – 176
Baker Street was the first I found.
Boris Gets A Statue
Boris Johnson’s father, Stanley unveiled a statue called Boris yesterday. But it is a large polar bear in front of Peter Jones in no way connected to the Mayor of London.
There’s more about the statue here.
I liked it and would vote for Boris to stay.
I doubt a lady who got on the bus towards Wandsworth would though, as she was wearing a fur coat.
Sculpture At The Building Design Centre, Islington
This piece of large art has turned up outside the Building Design Centre in Islington.
It’s certainly not as understandable as the bouncy bus.
But what is it? I’m not impressed.
The National Portrait Gallery Was Quiet
There has been a lot of criticism of the new portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge. Here‘s the Independent’s view.
So I went to have a look this morning.
The gallery wasn’t busy and I was able to see the portrait by myself just after ten.
It was alright I suppose, but it was the sort of painting, that was made for a biscuit tin or a chocolate box. In some ways, it was too photographic, and as I like photographs for portraits I slipped into the Taylor Wessing Photgraphic Portrait Prize, to see some good ones.
I was not disappointed and the exhibition was well worth the two pound entrance.
As to Her Highness’s portrait, I’ll give a final verdict, when I see it on a tin.
The Old Royal Naval College At Greenwich
The Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval College is being restored. So I went and took some pictures.
In a few weeks time, they will be allowing you to get close to the work. I shall go again.
Derry Becomes UK City Of Culture
There is a touch of deja-vu about how Derry is being made the UK City of Culture for 2013.
There was a lot of cynical thought about what might happen when Liverpool became European Capital of Culture in 2008. However, looking back from 2010 in this article in the Guardian, shows it was a great boost to the city. On my regular visits to the city, it now has a very buoyant attitude to the future, compared to say ten years ago.
Let’s hope that being UK City of Culture does the same for Derry.
What A Load Of Old Rubbish!
This sculpture is by Canning Town station.

What A Load Of Old Rubbish!
But it does have a rather unusual charm.
Combining Science And Art
I like sundials and this was a magnificent one.
It was a pity there wasn’t any explanation in English.
What Goes On Near Here?
This tiling is at Oval station on the Underground.

What Goes On Near Here?
We need more art on the Underground and generally in public!
