Another Bit Of London Bridge Station Opens
In March I posted pictures of the opening of platform 14 and 15 at London Bridge station. Yesterday, the next two platforms 12 and 13 opened.
10 and 11 are now closed for rebuilding and should reopen in January 2015, according to this web page.
The list of key dates and service changes is given here, with finish set out in 2018.
Let’s hope it’s all worth it!
London’s Secret Underground Line Is Coming Together
yesterday, I went to the Tate Modern.
It is one of those awkward journeys from here in Dalston, especially, as when I got out the 21 and 141 buses going to London Bridge station, seemed to be conspicuous by their absence.
So I decided to take a 38 to the Angel for a Northern line train to London Bridge, but when I got there, I just missed the southbound train.
In the end, as a northbound one arrived, I hopped to Kings Cross to get a Thameslink train to Blackfriars station, the new southern entrance of which is close by the Tate Modern.
Thameslink is gradually turning from a once every ten minutes or so railway, into a line with an Underground-like frequency of twenty-four trains an hour. Although, that frequency won’t be achieved until 2018 at the earliest.
But even so, the line is a good short cut across the centre of London. For example, in one of my trips, where I was searching for the Dudding Hill line, I ended up at Cricklewood, so to come home, I took a Thameslink train to London Bridge for a 141 bus home.
It might seem a roundabout route, but it minimised the walking. Especially, as the 141 bus stop is the closest to my house.
A Double Handrail At London Bridge
I’ve been up these steps many times in the past and don’t remember the double handrail in the middle.

A Double Handrail At London Bridge
They seem to be springing up in a lot of places in London. They certainly makes the steps a lot safer. Especially for me, as my left hand isn’t the best.
Inside The New London Bridge Station
The first two completed platforms, 14 and 15, of the new London Bridge station opened today.
Thery’ve now closed platforms, 12 and 13, so they can be refurbished.
It’ll be interesting to watch as the new station appears platform by platform!
The Shard Mucks Up My Journey Home
I had lunch today in Carluccio’s at Canary Wharf and afterwards went to the excellent Waitrose there to get some shopping that is difficult to find closer to home.
As the DLR wasn’t running due to engineering works, I decided to get the Jubilee line home. I can either change to the Overground at Canada Water station or go to London Bridge station and get a 141 bus home.
But on windy days like this, only a large person would go via London Bridge, as the wind around the Shard makes the bus station a rather unpleasant place.
So I used the Overground!
More Demolition At London Bridge Station
As I came back, I passed through London Bridge station.
Very little is now left of the old station.
Note the pristine refurbished Class 465 in one picture.
Some may decry our trains, but we have one of the newest fleets in the world and even ones like these, which are wenty years old, look almost fresh out of the factory.
Room At The Top
The Times today has a big article about how the office space in The Shard has not been letting very well.
If we assume their report is correct, then could this be because, The Shard is not a building that those who live in this great city, don’t generally like the building. I don’t think I’ve actually met anybody who lives here, who has visited the viewing galleries or speaks positively about the building. Admittedly, I’ve met a few from out of town, who have liked the experience.
So does this negative attitude amongst the people of London, put decision makers off renting space in the tower.
Apart from the fact, that it gets into every picture you seem to take of London, with the notable exception of the cable-car, where Canary Wharf is in the way, the biggest problem I have with the building, is that is has questionable aerodynamics. When I end up at London Bridge station and want to get home, I go to the bus station and get a friendly 141 bus to perhaps fifty metres from my house. But on a breezy day, the turbulence around the base of The Shard can be fearsome. So I now take other routes on breezy days!
I suspect, anybody interested in renting space on a windy day, would go elsewhere!
The Shard is a classic case of a designer not making sure all the consequences of his design are covered.
Perhaps the building is only suffering from the same sort of problems as did CentrePoint in the late 1960s, which stood empty for five years on completion.
How To Recycle A Roof
This story on the BBC, tells how the old station roof at London Bridge station, is going to be given to the Vale of Rheidol railway in Wales to help build their new museum.
It wasn’t many years ago, when this structure would have been reduced to scrap, so Network Rail are to be congratulated. Hopefully, the new museum in Aberystwyth will bring tourists to the town and create some new businesses and jobs.
I think too, that this story illustrates how intelligent recycling might be slightly more expensive, but properly done, it can save lots of money elsewhere. The new museum in Wales is reported to be costing ten million, but how much more would it cost without the recycled roof.
London Bridge Bus Station Is Open Again
After the closure caused by the sewer failure, the bus station at London Bridge station is now open again.
I’m pleased as it gives me an easy way home from the Jubilee line, with a Marks and Spencer’s at the interchange to the bus.
Demolition At London Bridge Station
Work has properly started on the new London Bridge station, as the pictures show.
The bus station is still closed, but according to a guy in the buses information booth, it might be open next Monday. I think he did mean the 11th and he blamed the weight of the Shard for the damage to the sewer that caused the need for closure. He didn’t like the building either, as I don’t!
For more details on the rebuilding of the station, look here on the Network Rail web site.
