I Apologise For The Quality Of My Latest Posts
Since swapping to a Microsoft Surface Studio Pro 2 and Windows 10, the quality of my posts has got worse.
This is because they seem to be incompatible with WordPress.
It annoys me terribly, as I was brought up in a letterpress print works, where nothing less than perfect pages were tolerated.
I suspect I need to return to Windows 7!
I have improved them by reediting them in Windows 7 on my old laptop.
I certainly couldn’t recommend a Microsoft Surface Pro and Windows 10 to a blogger, who uses WordPress.
Stopping Your Computer Upgrading To Windows 10
I never upgrade my computers to the new version of an operating system, unless it is absolutely necessary.
No-one has convinced me of a valid reason yet! And I doubt anyone will!
They are my computers, so I decide when to upgrade, not some idiot who might vote for Donald Trump and believes in the right to bare arms and the death penalty. Not you Bill, but can you vouch for all your employees?
But I have been pointed to this little program entitled GWX Control Panel, that immunises your computer against unwanted junk from Micros**t!
Network Rail Displays Must Work On Windows XP
I saw this screen at Finsbury Park station.
There’s not much wrong with Windows XP compared to some of the later versions.
Why Does Software Go Backwards?
My ten-year-old Hewlett-Packard laptop is at death’s door, so I’ve had to switch to a much newer Sony. I bought the Sony, because i found the keyboard easy with my gammy left hand, which means I have difficulty with the shift key. Most capital letters are done by spanning my right hand.
Why is the version of Windows and Office 2010 so inferior to Windows Vista and Office 2007?
I would love to go out and buy a new laptop pre-loaded with Vista and Office 2007! And if it cost me more than it was worth, I wouldn’t mind.
Let’s face it, the hardware and software are the canvas on which a writer of software or all sorts of documents weave their fantasies.
So why should computer companies tell me what I can buy? If I wanted a part for most ten-year-old cars, it’s usually an easy purchase.
And then when you buy a new standalone product, like my Samsung mobile phone, it’s got more bugs than the insect house at the London Zoo. They may be clever and get a lot of sales, but the designers don’t think like users, which is the key to writing good software.
Freeing Up Disk Space On Vista
I found this useful article.
Nokia’s Critical Handset Launch
Not my headline, but one on the BBC’s web site, that links you to this story.
Sadly, it’s not a new version of the legendary 6310i, that many want, but some smart phone that they don’t.
It’s apparently based on Windows 8. Come to think of it what’s with Vista that I use.
I’m no technophobhe, but developments in hardware and software should be like men and women. As people have developed, the next generation is always perfectly understood by the previous one.
Where Is Notepad in Windows 7?
Notepad is one of those little programs in Windows that I’ve always used.
Until Windows 7, it was always easy to find under Accessories, but now such a boring but useful program has to be searched for.
The thing I use it for most is to strip control characters out of a string, I’ve captured from say a web page. I also use it, when I’ve filled in a form to hold and store, what I’ve typed in.
It is a very useful program, that has more used than a Swiss Army knife.
The Daisy 2011 Presentation Browser
I’ve just rewritten the first of my suite of Daisy Web Tools, the Presentation Browser.
I originally wrote the program for three reasons.
- You can control the size of the browser window, so that it fits your on-line Internet-based presentation. In the screen-shot above, the browser has been set to 800 x 600 pixels and some of the tolbars have been removed to give a cleaner view of the web page.
- The program allows you to print clean copies of pages from the Internet. The classic is wanting to print say a recipe or a set of instructions and instead of one page with what you want, you get the first bit on one page, the second on another and ipmteen pages of garbage. The Daisy Presentation Browser, allows you to select the part of the page you want and then print it.
- The program also allows you to take copies of web pages and then paste them into other programs, like Word and Paint. It makes producing manuals and on-line documentation a lot easier.
The software is free and can be downloaded from this page. There is a simple registration process to unlock some features of the program. As I hate spam with a vengeance, I only use e-mail addresses collected in the registration process to return user and registration codes.
The software works on any version of Windows later than 2000 or NT4.
To run the software you need to have Internet Explorer installed on your computer, but it doesn’t have to be your default browser.
Java Problems
I’m having a few problems on web sites that run a lot of Java. Nothing serious, but my computer tends to lock and I find that I have to reboot once a day or so. What worries me though, is that friends have also reported problems. There also seems to be threads in web site forums saying that some flavours of Windows, add-ons and Java have interaction problems.
I think that it is livable with, but I have stopped updating to the latest version of Java.
