Here Come the Nimbys
They are going to announce the compensation scheme for the High-Speed Line to the North (HS2) today, so what does the BBC do? They get a stupid Nimby on the BBC Breakfast counch. Looking at her, she looks like a typical Home Counties woman, who thinks much more for herself, than the general population. I was uncertain about HS2, until I read an article in Modern Railways, which convinced me that the planned route, via the Chilterns was correct.
There are a lot of unpopular developments we need like nuclear power stations and freight distribution depots. Done properly and sympathetically, they can be to everybody’s benefit.
We must not let the Nimbys win!
The route ignores Sheffield….
Why?

Correct at present! I suspect though that within a few years you’ll get ba good cross-UK route from Liverpool to Hull. After all, they’re starting to electrify the Liverpool-Manchester bit in a couple of years. I must admit that the Trans-Pennine Expresses are very good, as I used them to get to Middlesbrough. And very efficient too, according to the latest Modern Railways.

I agree about not letting the NIMBYs win as otherwise there will be no further developments in the UK (especially the SE of England), and we need more development to provide housing for everyone. However, I do think that there should be fair compensation for people who stand to lose equity. We have the crazy scheme being put forward that people who are currently selling their houses, due to a job change or divorce(?), can apply to get the government to buy their houses. Why? If people (anyone affected) are going to lose house value due to works that benefit the public, then the public purse should pay reasonable compensation. If say a house loses 10% of its value, then that is what they should be able to claim. Anyone trying to sell can drop the price by the discount and get a sale, and those who are not planning to sell can keep/spend the money as they see fit.

I suggest you read the document on this link before throwing out gratuitous insults.

I’ve been involved in large projectrs all my life. So many have been strangled by local interests just bworried about the vakue of their house. After all the Nimbys tried to get High Speed One built. How many of those that protested now take the train to Paris?
Also as a countryman, there are things I object to because they are scientifically incorrect, like wind farms for example. But I would never be a member of the Council for the fossilisation of rural England.
We need development to create the jobs for the next two hundred years. And I’m not talking just about jobs for the educated middle class.

This is not a nimby or class issue, as you seem to think.
If you wish to achieve any credibility please deal with the arguments which are available on my previous link.

[…] But when it was announced that the route would be to Birmingham in the last days of the disastrous NuLabor experiment, I warmed to it a bit, although I did think it needed to go via Heathrow. I also thought very much that it was a Nimby’s charter. […]
