The Bus Powered by a 2-Litre Diesel Engine

The 141 bus passes the end of my road, on its way to Wood Green, where my father’s print works used to be.

A 141 Bus to Wood Green

The route is partly operated by hybrid buses, some of which are Wright Gemini 2 HEVs, which are powered by the 2-litre diesel engine from a Ford Puma.

I’ve always been a bit suspicious of hybrid cars, but surely this bus must be more fuel-efficient, than a similar-sized traditional bus.

An interesting aside here is that the bus is also built without a chassis, partly to save weight and the company that builds these buses, the Wright Group, is family-owned in Northern Ireland.

So does innovation and good design flourish in companies which benefit from not being under the control of unimaginative shareholders and wunches of bankers?

  1. I remember the 641 that ran the same route (Moorgate to Winchmore Hill) until November 1961. The 6– buses were fully electric trolleybuses using overhead wires. The last ones in Londin were taken out of service in 1962. What goes round comes round.

  2. I used to catch the 641 from Wood Green to my doctor’s in Winchmore Hill. Do you remember Dr. Egerton White?

    • No I don’t remember him; we used Dr. Baker. I was delivered by Dr. Baker in the upstairs front bedroom in Avondale Road where we lived until I was one year old.

  3. Dr.White delivered me. He was a typical GP of the time in many ways; three piece suit, watch chain, big black bag and a Rover car. Except because of his complexion he might have been mixed race. He was close to Halliday’s the chemist.

  4. […] Ipswich, I got to sit at the front on the top deck of the 141 bus.  The bus today was one of the Wright hybrid ones, which certainly to me seem to be the future for bus […]

  5. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
