Comparing Texas and the EU

I found this on the web in a piece talking about the Texan use of the death penalty.

Luckily we don’t live in Texas, where they own around 51 million guns (more than all of the European Union combined) and the Encyclopedia Britannica is banned because it contains a formula for making beer.

The population of Texas is incidentally 24.7 million and that of the EU is 501.3 million.  As to the Encyclopedia Britannica, I haven’t seen one in years and don’t know anybody who has one.

I’d be interested to know how many people are killed accidentally by guns in Texas every year.

  1. My aunt had literally thousands of books, but didnt have EB. We dont have it either. But we did have a lot of reference books for the girls, some have gone now they are adult, but the ones we have are rarely used as I google things! The book I use the most is a thesaurus, followed by crossword dictionary.

  2. About ten years ago there was a programme on Radio 4 which described the Texas execution on 7 Oct 1998 of Jonathan Nobles who, at the request of his estranged mother, sang Silent Night as he was being injected. It might sound a bit mawkish but I found it a moving programme.

The details of all Texas executions over the past 30 years are described on the TDCJ’s rather disturbing website: http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/executedoffenders.htm .

It also includes scheduled executions, three being scheduled for the next week: http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/scheduledexecutions.htm .

I am against capital punishment in any circumstances.

    • I agree. it’s funny how the UN has time and money to investigate the goings on at Dale Farm, but they haven’t put as much as a nose near Texas and its execution policy.
