Home Kits Signal End Of Cervical Smear Test

This is a headline on the front page of today’s copy of The Times.

Being male and living alone, I wouldn’t know what a woman thinks!

But there must surely be some women, who would think this is at least an improvement.

Health services across the world will also be able to save money, as the procedure must be more efficient and need less staff, who can probably be redeployed, where they are needed.

  1. On paper it sounds like a great idea. My concern is that many women will find it difficult to obtain their own sample. And younger women particularly might think it a bit yucky. I think it will be great for women’s dignity, it is not a nice experience having the test done. But less sure about the accuracy. I hope they are going to be offering the test to younger women, say 18 or 20 year olds, and they are going to ditch the nonsense that virgins can’t get cervical cancer and don’t need smears; that was based on a very flawed study of nun in a small convent none of whom got cervical cancer.

    • As The Times put it on the front of the paper, it will certainly have caught everybody’s eye, so it better does what it says on the packet!
