First Class 484 Arrives On The Isle Of Wight
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Railway Gazette.
The title says it all, but the article contains links to interesting pictures and video of the solution to getting a two-car Class 484 train onto an island.
Let’s hope they keep the 484s away from the graffiti vandals.
I was alarmed to see the chap in the orange hi-vis dart under the ‘coupling’ between the tractor unit and the trailer as the rig was being moved off the ferry (at 0.25 on the video). True, the video was speeded up, so I’m sure it was moving very slowly, but that’s no excuse for complacency. If he’d slipped and fallen the driver would have had no way of knowing. Very unsafe practice, and it wouldn’t be allowed on the railways. It suggests the job wasn’t properly planned – that sort of manoeuvre shouldn’t be necessary and ought to have been identified in the risk assessment.

I remember a safety poster from the early sixties, showing two railway wagons with a tempting space between them. The caption on the poster was “Trespassers will be executed”
