I Have Just Been Microsofted!
I run Office 365 and today it updated itself.
Now nothing in the suite works.
I don’t like automatic updates, as they have this power to drop you deep in it.
I usually only upate software, when there is a problem!
If Microsoft Built Cars…
There are loads of jokes that start like this and you can find pages on the Internet like this.
But what if Microsoft built planes?
This article on the BBC shows the result.
The plan is to use the Stratolaunch plsne to launch satellites. More is here on Wikipedia.
The idea is not new, The North American X-15 of the 1950s, was a space plane that was launched from under the wing of a B-52 Stratofortress.
Wikipedia says this about the flights of the X-15
During the X-15 program, 13 flights by eight pilots met the Air Force spaceflight criterion by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80 km), thus qualifying these pilots as being astronauts.
Not bad for an conventional rocket-powered aeroplane built over half a century ago!
Let’s Have Some Rules For Software!
I am in the process of moving my contacts and e-mails from a Windows Vista computer with Outlook 2007 to another with Windows 7 and Outlook 2010, as the first computer has a disc fault, that means you can’t use Outlook. I can’t even copy or zip the Outlook file, which I suspect means it’s seriously fucked.
I have backups of everything I need from perhaps thirty days ago. But of course you then have the problem of transferring the data from one format to the other.
My preferred solution would have been just to buy a new Windows Vista computer with Outlook 2007, but of course that’s not possible, even if I don’t need support.
So I’m stuck in the process of transferring data from one data format to the other.
I would assume the transfer system was designed by an idiot who was as cruel as Stalin or Hitler, with the intelligence of the Prince Regent as portrayed in Blackadder. Dl Microsoft sub-contract their program design to Boko Horam or ISIS.
Surely, if you want to transfer data from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2010, it should be just a matter of opening the file in the new program and then letting the program do all the work!
It’s been similar with transferring from my Galaxy S4 to S5, where things are all different and some features don’t even exist.
I suppose computer companies don’t see us as consumers who know what we want, but idiots to be ripped-off.
Microsoft Outlook Is Full Of Bugs
I would be annoyed with myself, if I’d written software with as many bugs as Microsoft Outlook.
What is driving me hairless at the moment is trying to send the e-mail address, telephone numbers and physical address of a sick friend, to those in my address book who know him. I’m using a vcf format Business Card.
Unfortunately, since I first sent his address by this method a couple of years ago, the entry has changed, as my friend has moved.
But Outlook persists in sending the old details. Do I have to delete the entry and reenter everything?
That to me is a triple-X rated bug.
An Interesting Slant On Apple
I found this article on the BBC web site. I like this interesting snippet.
This is what happens when a company is too cheap to invest in research and development. Did you know that Apple spends far less on R&D than any of its rivals – a paltry 2% of revenues, versus 14% for Google and Microsoft?
I’ve run R&D and you must spend to keep ahead of the game. Perhaps, Apple are too interested in making money?
But mugs will still queue up for the iPhone5. I won’t!
Canoe Slalom At The Lee Valley – Video
I made up this video to give a view of what it is like at the Lee Valley White Water Centre.
It should be up later today. The trouble with video, is I can only make it on my old computer. And guess what M$ have upsexed the video maker, to make it more difficult to use. I want my old one back. When something works well don’t mess about with it!
The Germans And A Few Others Have Landed
There were quite a few ships around Canary Wharf today.
The Deutschland came in last year. The Octopus is owned by Paul Allen, one of the co-founders of Microsoft.
Shouldn’t the latter have had a blue hull?
Note the floating gangway across the dock to the yachts. When I first saw it, I thought it was a version of a floating gangway, I saw some years ago in the South of France, which consisted of a series of hexagonal chambers linked together. I don’t think it was though.
What I Remember About The Opening Ceremony From Beijing In 2008
As a computer person, I remember the computer screens around the stadium, showing Microsoft’s infamous blue screens of death. I’m not the only person either. Perhaps they hadn’t paid the licence fees.
Let’s hope they use good old-fashioned technology tonight.
Greeks Vent Their Fury on Microsoft
The Greeks have tried to destroy Microsoft’s offices in Athens by fire according to this article in The Register.
It would appear no-one was hurt.
Java Problems
I’m having a few problems on web sites that run a lot of Java. Nothing serious, but my computer tends to lock and I find that I have to reboot once a day or so. What worries me though, is that friends have also reported problems. There also seems to be threads in web site forums saying that some flavours of Windows, add-ons and Java have interaction problems.
I think that it is livable with, but I have stopped updating to the latest version of Java.
