Paintings by Father and Son
The picture shows two paintings by Arthur Perigal and his son.
The one by the father is on the left and is of the Alba Villa in Rome.
Walking to the Football
For the first time in my 63 years, I walked all the way from where I lived to a professional football match. I had cycled to Spurs a few times in my teens, but walking the couple of kilometres to The Emirates last night was unique.
It was a good match and Ipswich can’t complain too much about the result.
The match is best summed up by the Ipswich manager, Paul Jewell’s comments by text message.
Players were terrific. Great effort over two legs against a world class side.
Fans terrific as well, showed what a big club this is.
He seems to understand how to motivate. Did his predecessor?
A Letter on Adoption
This was a letter from Ian Storey on adoption in yesterday’s Times.
Babies in need of adoption are not born with racial preferences or prejudices. They are born with a need to be cared for so they can flourish, rather than slip into compromised lives. Every sidelined child can easily become a needlessly tragic tale.
Well said.
C was adopted and was a complete believer in the system, even it did have the odd flaw. But then show me a perfect system for anything and I’ll show you a liar.
America Puts Guns Before Fighting Crime and Terrorism
The story of Steven Greenoe is a classic farce and it shows how the United States love of the gun, gets in the way of fighting crime and terrorism around the world. Afer the attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords, surely the country should do something to curb guns, which seem to be at the cause of much of the world’s troubles.
I recommend all United States politicians read my Abba Eban quote.
Gates Takes on Polio
Bill Gates has now turned his big guns on polio. Good!
The Search for the New Ratfinder General
Rats have been seen scuttling around Number 10 Downing Street, for the first time since Cherie Blair was rumoured to have banished the last Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, Humphrey, to another place.
The real problem is not finding the cat, but giving the new appointee, a suitable name.
Abba Eban
I always like people who use English properly and thoughtfully. Abba Eban was one such person, although I may not always have agreed with everything he said and did.
The Times yesterday quoted him memorably in the second leader.
History teaches us, that men and nations, only behave wisely when they have exhausted all other alternatives.
Many of the world’s stupid leaders could improve their nations, by following the words of the man, The Times credits as the founding father of Israeli democracy
