Ipswich Launches Campaign Against Cheap Super Strength Alcohol

Ipswich is an independent town in the very independent county of Suffolk and it has always been thus for both of them.  Today though it is reported, that they are launching a campaign to ban cheap super strength alcohol. It’s all here in the East Anglian Daily Times. I heard of it on Radio 5 and they said it was the first town in England to do so.

Let’s hope it all succeeds in its objectives.

I suppose the real problem is to get all of the small off-licences to comply.

Aberdoom

Not my name for it, but a Scot, who I’ve known for years.

But just look at this.

It must be one of the most remarkable weather pictures, I’ve ever seen.

Should Well-Off Pensioners Pay More Tax?

I’m not in favour of the proposal of the Liberal Democrats that well-off pensioners, like myself should pay more tax.

If the government keeps the money, it’ll only spend it on something of which I disapprove, like more quangos to employ the so-called great and good, many of whom have never done a real day’s work in their lives.

I prefer to give more than equivalent donations to charities of my choice, which I do on my birthday each year, in thanks for surviving another twelve months!

The Queen Buys Pictures Of Herself

It has been revealed that the Queen has bought a set of prints of herself by Andy Warhol and they will be displayed at Windsor Castle. It’s reported here on the BBC.

There is no comment from Her Majesty, but I suspect she’d have vetoed buying them in May, if she didn’t like them.

December the 9th Is Dalston to Clapham Day

Howard Smith, the CEO for London Rail at Transport for London has let the cat out of the bag in this interview. Here’s some of what he said.

London Railways invested about £3 billion between 2005 and 2011. That’s gone into the East London Line, North London Line upgrade, new trains, the creation of the Overground, all the investment in stations that went into the Overground, creating what from the December 9 when East London Line Phase 2 opens will be the Orbital Network.

December the 9th is a Sunday by the way. Judging by what I saw last Sunday, it would appear that much of it could open now. But it’s only eleven weeks.

Larry On The Voice Of Russia

Apparently, it’s not just the Chief Whip that’s in trouble, but the Chief Mouser to! This article from the Voice of Russia, shows how the most important news get distributed around the world. Note the picture.

I suppose President Putin uses tigers in the Kremlin.

This post was prompted by a wonderful picture of Larry in today’s Times.

I Picked Up A Fallen Woman Last Night

Not one of Gladstone’s Ladies of the Night, but a young Estonian, who’d had a pedal failure on her bike last night, and virtually ended up in the road in front of a bus.

It could be that someone had made that mistake of forcing a right hand thread nut on the side, where you need a left hand thread.

It’s a common mistake.  I did it in the 1950s and I still remembered.

Why No Flooded Prisons?

In all the rain we’ve had lately, I can’t remember any cases of prisons being flooded.

Does this mean that we are more careful where we site prisons than new homes?

Surely the same rules should apply.
