Whitechapel Station – 10th August 2021

I took these pictures as I passed through Whitechapel station, this morning.

Note.

  1. Much of the platform lighting on the Sub Surface Lines platforms is now in place.
  2. The main entrance to the station on appears to be coming on.
  3. The walkway over the Overground trains appears to be fairly well fitted out.
  4. There are a lot less blue hoardings generally.

This picture from Crossrail is a visualisation of the Overground platforms, after completion.

My last five pictures show the final design emerging.

When Will Whitechapel Station Be Finished?

This weekend, the station is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Could the builders be having a big push to get the station ready for opening?

  • Your guess as to the finish date is as good as mine!
  • The station is gradually coming out of its shell of hoardings and starting to look impressive.

But I did write a post called Is Whitechapel Station Going To Be A Jewel In The East?. I still have high hopes for the station being an architectural gem.

  1. With the transfer of Paddington Station either yesterday or last Friday to TFL ownership it was mentioned that Whitechapel Station was next on the list with some reports mentioning August as the transfer date. ( This might fit in with weekend closure to remove scaffolding etc?)

It will be interesting to see whether Whitechapel follows the example of Moorgate with the main entrance and lifts to overground underground opening ahead of Crossrail/ Elizabeth Line.

The lift at the end of the Underground westbound platform invites that it is under test with instructions for passengers not to use .!

    • I don’t think handover of Whitechapel station will be that far off.

But Canary Wharf puzzles me. Canary Wharf had a large say in the design and construction and they seem to get buildings built on time.

I wonder, if Canary Wharf delayed the station a bit, so they could meet a TfL milestone and use the workers elsewhere.

If that is the case, it won’t delay Crossrail.

After all trains must be running through Canary Wharf station, as I saw then running through Custom House station.
