A Referendum for the Falklands

This seems to be a good idea, although I don’t think it will come to any agreement acceptable to Argentina.

It does seem though that referenda are all the rage at present. We may have one about EU membership, but I think it would be better if we concentrated on getting all of the countries in Europe sorted first. We could all start with balancing the books.

The Spanish Bailout and Gibraltar

Spain makes two sets of headlines today; it has got a massive loan to sort out its banks and it is expected to protest loudly at the Wessexes visit to Gibraltar. Although, we are not directly effected by the Spanish bailout, we could be in future, through the London market or the IMF.

Spain remember has a row going with Argentina over the nationalisation of Repsol’s assets in that country.

And then there’s the Falklands! Where Spain has usually supported Argentina.

There are reasons to believe that relations between Spain and the UK are going to be difficult in the next few months.

Ben Macintyre on the Alawites

If you wonder what’s going on in Syria, an article in The Times today, by Ben MacIntyre gives a very sound and fearful insight into the world and history of the Alawites. One quote from the article follows.

Many fear the fall of Assad will give rise to wholesale retribution.

Everybody who wants to make a statement about Syria, should read this article. If you can’t get hold of a copy, at least read the Wikipedia article.

I doubt that we’ll ever get anywhere with Assad and this bunch.

Ed Milliband Admits He Looks Like Wallace

It’s all here in the Daily Mail.

I suppose it could be worse, if looked like some other cartoon characters.

At least Peter Sallis, who voices Wallace, went to the sane school as I did, Minchenden in North London.

Exploitation of White Girls “is Asian problem”

The headline of this report comes from a piece from the front page of The Times and is based on quotes from Nazir Afzal, who is the Chief Crown Prosecutor in North West England.

He also says he will not turn a blind eye to crimes in any community.

I totally agree with that last statement and The Times and their reporter Andrew Norfolk is to be congratulated on their coverage of the subject. I suspect that the paper doesn’t go down too well in Pakistani communities.

Monstrous Crimes Against Innocents

Not my words but a phrase from the first leader in The Times accusing President Assad of Syria of carrying out atrocities against his own people.

What is going on thee can’t go on for much longer and we should act.

How about letting him come to the Olympics and then arresting him. I’m sure he’d love some nice Dutch hospitality in The Hague.

Surprise! Surprise!

The Police don’t like an external regulator.  Judging by the Blobbies I see in some of my travels, I can see why!

When did the Police ever accept that someone outside their ranks could be right in anything?

Strangely, the Chief Inspector of Prisons is often an outsider.

The Suffolk Show is Cancelled

In all the years, I’ve lived in the county, I’ve never known the Suffolk Show to be cancelled because of the weather.

But it has been this year. It’s reported here.

Where was the Health and Safety Assessment?

This story of an off-duty trainee fireman, who saved a man from a blazing car, that then exploded, is a good story we all like to read.  The fireman is being rightly praised and no-one is bothering about the Health and Safety implications. Perhaps, we have moved on in this area.

Smoking is so last century: the new stigma is obesity

This is the title of an article in the Evening Standard tonight.

I very much agree, although in many ways they are equally bad.
