The Rising Cost of Fuel
I can’t say I’m bothered, as I don’t drive anymore after my stroke. I think though, if I still lived on my stud in Suffolk in the middle of nowhere, by now I’d be thinking of getting an electric car or at least a small hybrid.
The trouble is that people are unwilling to change their lifestyles to suit the circumstances we all live in.
I don’t regret not having a car anymore. I don’t get ripped off by fuel costs, insurance scams, unfair parking rules and congestion charges and I get to most places just as quick as if I drove. My monthly expenses have dropped drammatically!
And of course, if I need too, I can always use a taxi. I haven’t used one in London for someting like six months.
One Law For The Stone Roses Drummer and One For Everyone Else!
Apparently, Ian Brown, the drummer of the Stone Roses, was only fined for doing 105 mph on the M6. The full report is here.
Everybody else would have been banned, but then he has to get to London to see his son and for rehearsals.
There’s nothing wrong with the train and it’s probably quicker. He could I suspect also afford a chauffeur!
Raising Motorway Speed Limits
There is a lot of talk and argument about raising the motorway speed limits to 80 mph. Read about it here in the Independent, where they say that the limit will rise, but with lots more 20 mph zones in towns.
No-one is raising the fact, that more and more container traffic is being taken off the roads and put on the rails. This will decrease the congestion and increase the speed of the traffic. But they do need to selectively spend some money on rail junctions and road/rail terminals.
The Tevez Defence
Carlos Tevez got himself off a serious charge by claiming he couldn’t read English according to many reports, including this one in the Mirror.
I would assume that he didn’t have any colleagues or friends, who couldn’t read English either. I once had a spam e-mail in Russian, so I asked one of the builders, who was Lithuanian, what it meant. He said it was spam, so I ignored it.
How long before the defence is used in a serious case like murder or rape? The accused in a rape case could perhaps claim that he didn’t understand what No meant.
Perhaps the best thing we could do is give Tevez six months to learn basic English.
Consumers Are Lazy When It Comes To Saving Energy
I diidn’t say this, Chris Huhne did and it’s the lead story on the front page of The Times.
But it’s true!
- The first thing I did with this house was to get rid of most of the high consumption bulbs. For a start I had 17 of those awful halogen downlights, that make better short life room heaters, than lights. The LEDs I used were a straight replacement.
- I searched for electricity and gas companies that gave me a good deal.
- But my biggest saving was selling my car and using public transport. That is not for everyone, but surely many families could make do with one less vehicle.
It’s not difficult, but people always find an excuse not to save money. And then moan about it.
Police Waste More Time and Money on Chris Huhne Case
That’s what it looks like according to this report on the BBC.
Enquiries started in May, so surely even the dimmest officer in the Essex Constabulary could have ascertained what the truth in this case is.
Either Chris Huhne was driving the car, in which case he should take the consequences or his wife was.
As they are both fairly high profile, I suspect that proof as to their whereabouts at the time should be fairly easy to obtain. I suspect too, that the CCTV at Stansted Airport would show the answer too. Unless of course Chris Huhne had dressed up as his wife, so that he could get off a speeding charge. But of course, nothing in his past life would indicate he would do that! One of the biggest problems men have with this, is often they are a totally different size to their wife.
It sounds to me that this case might end up with a more serious charge.
Whatever happened to the beloved criminal quote of “It’s a fair cop, officer!”
Drunk In Charge of a Coolbox
You can hardly believe this man could be so stupid.
I suppose his only defence is that he is from Queensland.
Vehicle Unfriendly Plymouth
You may think I’m anti-car. But then I’ve never been anywhere with so many speed cameras.
These two were in one of the main shopping streets.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in such a position before.
Sat Nav Racing
Surely this is another reason why they should be banned.
Although I’m waiting for a delivery, where the driver seems to have got lost between Wembley and my house.
Perhaps the sat-nav has so many features, he can’t work it!
Crossrailed Again!
I have a feeling London is going to have to learn to live with CrossRail. Not content with causing chaos in Oxford Street, the construction work has now effectively removed Hanover Square from being a useful thoroughfare between Fenwick and John Lewis.
But it still doesn’t stop idiots driving through to make matters worse for buses, taxis and pedestrians.
I must say that I might miss driving at times, but not in Central London.
I should say that I walked to John Lewis, a couple of minutes quicker than the Ferrari! But perhaps the driver was a learner, as this driver was.
