A Good Simple Design For A Seat

Everywhere on public transport these days you seem to see uncomfortable, ugly and hard metal or plastic seating.

I saw this seat on Harlesden station this morning.

It’s certainly a lot better and more pleasing on the eye.

It’s also got the roundels

Looking For Some Brass Knobs

I have lots of these IKEA Expedit drawers and cupboards.

As my house has chocolate brown steel beams with brass details, I’d like to replace these knobs with brass ones of a similar form.

Does anybody know someone, who could anodise me about four dozen in brass?

And Now There Are Four!

I collected the third and fourth of my dining chairs today.

And Now There Are Four!

And Now There Are Four!

I did it like I did last time on a 30 bus.

As you can see, they still stack well, even with the IKEA cushions.

My Chairs Now Have A Padded Seat

I was in IKEA yesterday and saw some strap-on chair cushions.  So I bought two for my new stacking chairs!

They fit well despite the fact they cost a lot less than the chairs. It goes to show, you don’t have to always spend a fortune to get what you want!

When the living room is finished, I might change them to match the carpet! But knowing my love of simple design, I suspect that might never happen.

My New Stacking Chairs

My old dining chairs have had it and one has even collapsed. So I ordered two Castor stacking chairs from twentytwentyone.

As you can see I brought the two of them back on a number 30 bus.

The weirdest thing is that the size of the seat on the chairs and my old stools is virtually exactly the same. The new chairs are 36 cm. and the stools are 35.6 cm. It actually looks like the old stools, which were made in the 1970s are probably fourteen inches. They are also the same height, as you can see in the picture, which shows the end of my table.

Looking For A Stackable Dining Chair

In my house, I have an unusual elliptical table. I need some chairs to go with it, as the original Habitat ones C bought, are gradually giving up the ghost.

I’d seen one in a shop that might do, near to the grotty hotel, I’d spent the night in. But it was the other side of the station, between the station and the Metro station at Federiksberg. So I took the Metro to that station and then walked back. It was raining hard and my map had collapsed in the rain.  I was on the point of giving up and trying to hail a taxi, when I found a parking map, and a helpful Dane, who said I could walk it in about ten minutes.  I actually, ran it in five!

The chair is called Zesty and comes from PlyCollection.  It is shown here.

At the price shown on the ticket, they are around 290 pounds. But the Latvian company, who makes them, don’t seem to have an agent in the UK.

In the end, I made the train with fifteen minutes to spare.

My Unique Dining Room Table

Unique is defined as being unlike anything else or one of a kind. I didn’t make it, as it was made by a furniture maker called Julian Ellis, out of Suffolk Oak. But it was to my design brief.

I wanted an elliptical table, as that gives the most space at mealtimes and also because the ellipse is the perfect shape.  After all, circles are only a specific form of an ellipse with only one focus.

Note how the small leaves drop, so it can go against the wall. This was needed as at Debach, we had a long narrow kitchen.

It must be getting to be near to forty years old and all it will need to see me out is probably a proper polish.

Three Of The Best

These stools are unique.

Three Of The Best

Three Of The Best

There is five or six of them, but today I can only find five, so either I can’t count, one has gone missing in the move, or there only ever was that number.

Every home should have some as they are so useful.

They are idea for sitting round the dinner table and easily fit in between chairs.

They are as sturdy as the man who stands at the base of an tower of acrobats and are ideal for standing on.

Two or more also make good stands for cutting long pieces of wood.

They are still pretty immaculate too, as they were hand made from oak, in Suffolk by a furniture maker called Julian Ellis around 1980, to match the table that I’m sitting at now.

But Julian didn’t design them! I did! And of all the things I’m proudest of designing it is these humble but oh so useful stools.

January 2015 Update – I’ve just counted properly and they are the Suffolk Six.
