How To Do Food At An Event

If I’d wanted I could have pre-ordered a Gordon Ramsey-styled picnic box, but as I’m a coeliac, it didn’t say if they were gluten-free or not, so I opted to buy at the event. This is the chicken kebab I had, which was certified by the chef who was cooking it as gluten-free.

Gluten-Free Chicken Kebab at Zoo Lates

It was delicious and the salad was fresh and not of the limp variety you tend to get in many places.  They also gave me a discount because I didn’t want the pitta bread.

But it was only one of many varieties of fast food and drink, including Aspall Cyder on offer. There was for example this Korean stall.

And even this splendidly politically incorrect one.

Sadly, there was no Cambodian for me.  This is the only completely gluten-free cuisine in the world.

The food on offer did show how fast food should be done.  You would have had to be very picky not to have found something you could have eaten.

Let’s hope the Olympics follow the lead set at the Zoo.  But I bet they’ll produce the sort of stuff I can’t eat, like they do at Wembley Stadium.

Beckham Makes It to North Korea

Pehaps the most surprising news over Christmas, was the news that Bend It Like Beckham was shown, albeit heavily edited, on North Korean television.

What odds would you get on David himself going to North Korea this year?

Not very good, I suspect!

An Edinburgher Makes Peace with Glasgow

Gavin Mackay successfully makes sausages in South Korea.  He had a bit of a problem with the seasoning and eventually found one in Glasgow.  This  he admitted is very unusual for a man from Edinburgh, as ne’er the twain shall agree!

Cooking Rice Korean Style

I cooked one of my chili con carnes for myself ,my son  and one of his friends today. As the friend is Korean, he cooked the rice and it was delicious.  He cooked it from scratch and interestingly, the method he used was very similar to the one Waitrose put on their packet of organic long grain rice. He did wash the rice more thoroughly in a sieve than I would and I think he used more rice and a bit more water.  But who cares? It worked!

So next time you want to cook rice, have a go and cook it properly, rather than using a microwave.

As the rice was so good, next time he comes, I’ll video a master in action! Would this be a first of a Korean cooking rice on an AGA?

Whilst on the subject of chili con carne, check out Wikipedia. There are some interesting and controversial ideas there.  To me chili always has kidney beans, but that is not allowed by some. There is this statement.

Chili Appreciation Society International specified in 1999 that, among other things, cooks are forbidden to include beans, marinate any meats, or discharge firearms in the preparation of chili for official competition.

I’m certainly with them on firearms.

I also found that the chili was a good mouth freshener in the same way as  the Waitrose Tiffin
