Viruses on Smart Phones

It is being reported that smart phones are now being targeted using apps that contain trojans and viruses.

This is just another reason, why I stick to my Nokia 6310i

It is now ten years old and may be a bit battered like me, but it sends texts and hey, it makes phone calls too!

I can drop it, which because of my stroke, I frequently do and if I go away for a few days, I know it will stay charged long enough, so I don’t have to take the charger.

Nuisance Calls

My last post took a long time to get posted as I was interrupted by an American lady on the phone, saying C had won a cruise. I dropped the phone and this hit some dodgy keystroke, which meant that the post I was editing got deleted.

If I have time, I usually greet these callers with suitable arrangement of Foxtrot Oscar, especially when they ask for C.  These low-life are a very good place to vent my anger and frustration with life.

My phones are all listed on the Telephone Preference Service, so they should not be cold calls. But then American companies do not feel that they should abide by UK and EU law. It’s America first and the rest don’t count.

Until they do, I will not buy any products from US companies, unless they adhere to the ethics that all sensible people adhere to!

An Old Friend Returns

My Nokia 6310I returned from the menders today, after just forty-eight hours away. All it needed was a change of keypad at a cost of around thirty pounds!

You can’t imagine how it feels to have an old friend back again in good health, even if they are rather battered like me.  It links perfectly to my Jaguar X-Type with Bluetooth, the keys are easy to use even for me in my state, text messages are easy to send, it lasts a whole week on one battery charge and it has all the strength of the proverbial brick outhouse.

Who wants any of these modern phones built with all the fragility of porcelain, unwanted complexity, features that no sane person would ever use and battery life of a few nanoseconds?

Especially as I found yesterday that as-new 6310Is are available in Bury St. Edmunds Market for a few pounds from a very competent stall run by a charming and very knowledgeable  Sikh gentleman. His stall was outside H Samuel

The Phone Finally Arrives

It was finally delivered at 14:45, by a pleasant driver, who hadn’t been the one, who had ytied to deliver it on Monday.

The Samsung B2100 is now working and I’m trying to find all the features. It didn’t come with a cable to link it to my computer, so this may be a problem, as I like to update the contacts from the computer, rather than by typing them in on the small keypad.

Why We All Hate Couriers – 3

The saga of the non-delivery of my mobile phone continues.  The courier was slated to deliver it between 16:55 and 17:55 yewsterday. I cancelled going out and stayed in, as I didn’t want to miss them this time.

And guess what?

They didn’t turn up. So I still haven’t got my phone. O2 have told them to deliver it today and there are rumours that it will be here by 12:00.  It’s not shown on the courier’s web site though! I probably won’t be as I have a physio appointment. I’ll have to hurry back.  But my secretary manager will be here.

Why We All Hate Couriers – 2

I’ve just seen on the courier’s web site that my phone won’t arrive until between 16:55 and 17:55 today.  So after waiting in all day yesterday for a non-delivery, I now have to wait in all today, for one at an inconvenient time. I do have other things to do, you know!

At least though, I have been able to charge up an old Nokia 6310i, so I have a phone.  But I think, I’m on a tariff far more expensive than the one I need for such a device.

Mo Farah

Mo Farah is another who delights me and brings a smile to my face.

Over the years, I’ve done business on telephone billing systems with quite a few immigrants of Somali origin. I’ve never had a problem and those that I dealt with were a pleasure with whom to do business. They all seemed to work hard to do the best for themselves and their families. We even put in a joint bid for the billing system for a Somali telephone service, based on redundant analogue mobile phone kit.

Mo was born in Somalia and by hard work, has become our best male middle-distance runner for several decades.  Let’s hope he gets a medal in London 2012! I sometimes think, I could have been a good club runner, but I didn’t have the dedication and I was an undiagnosed coeliac.

So why is it, that the Somalis I’ve met and people like Mo  are a credit to their homeland, but the country continues to be a total basket-case, with lots of death and piracy?

Don’t buy a Nokia X6 if you’ve had a stroke!

I have one of these phones and for my situation, they are designed all wrong.

My biggest problem is that I have had a stroke and I drop things or knock them on the floor.  If I dropped my Nokia 6310i, it just carried on working.  The X6 falls apart and you need to reenter date and time. It is totally unfit for my purposes.

It is a bit of a pity really about this lack of robustness, as I liked a lot about the phone.

I have just phoned O2 and they have agreed to swap the phone for something hopefully more suitable.  So that at least is a positive thing and a couple of stars at least for O2.  But they are generally very good over the phone and I’ve stayed with they for nearly 20 years.

My Infuriating Nokia X6

It must be the name X6.  It’s the name of much disparaged BMW!

But it really is an infuriating device.

Take today!  I’ve just uploaded a few albums from CDs so that I can play them if I get bored on the journey and need some music.  But can you do it by just clicking an album.  No!  You have to create a Playlist.  I don’t work that way.  I take the CD out of it;s box and put in the player.  Where is the equivalent?

As I learn more about this phone, I’ll return to it.
