How Did They Do That?
On Saturday evening, I ordered a copy of the Dorling Kindersley guide to Brussels from Amazon. The time on the confirming e-mail is 20:15 and I had another one on Sunday at 14:45 to say the book had been dispatched.
It arrived with the post this morning. At least Newmarket is not on strike.
I thought too, that the Royal Mail didn’t accept letters and parcels on Sunday. They obviously do for Amazon.
Shopping for One
I tend to cook meals in fours. Tonight, I’ve cooked four Moroccan chicken casseroles, of which I’ve frozen three and put one in the fridge for tomorrow’s lunch. I’m having a big lunch as I’m going racing and then watching Status Quo at Newmarket. (I still have a spare ticket, if anyone is interested!)
One of the reasons, I cook in fours, is that it is such a waste buying food for just one meal. Either you have to eat the same thing, two or even three days running, or throw most of it away.
Things I don’t like include :-
- Two for one or three for two deals. They are no cheaper for me, as the second one goes off before I can buy it.
- Meat usual comes in packs of two. So I have to buy two and put one in the freezer. Then I forget to get it out and have lots there. Then the freezer goes off and it’s all ruined. Grr!
- The lack of small sizes. There are some gluten-free pretzels that I like. No supermarket stocks the small size, so I eat too many if I buy a packet.
- Recipes that are made for four. OK, my maths is good, but can we have more recipes for one.
- I’ve got lots and lots of small packets of spices. Smaller ones would be better.
I do wonder whether the reason some people are obese, is that they live alone and buy too much!
It’s not that I’m unique in living alone. There are about 7,000,000 of us in the UK. So please can we have sensible sizes of food and other goods. If nothing it will cut down waste.
Trafford Centre
In my view there is only one good reason to go to the Trafford Centre in Manchester and that is to go to Carluccio’s for some nice gluten-free pasta. The place was designed straight out of the if it’s got crap statues on it, then it must be good school of architecture.
Look at them all around the roof.
At least I had a chance to take a picture of the Lotus in the car park.
I’d been to the Trafford Centre before and then I’d tried to buy something in Selfridges. So I’d asked where the Store Directory was and was told that they didn’t have one. Either the girl was having me on or they have one of the most warped marketing philosophies I’ve ever heard of. And then there was the shop where I wanted to buy some new shoes for real tennis. I use indoor court shoes and he couldn’t show me anything at all, so I left.
No wonder retail is in meltdown with methods and training like that!
But still on this visit, I saw some wannabe footballers wives preening themselves outside the restaurant. I didn’t like the pink stilettos.
On-Line Pick-and-Mix
Woolies is back as an on-line store.
They’ve apparently got Pick-and-Mix. With sounds as you drop the sweets into the bag.
I don’t eat sweets as I can’t be sure they don’t have the dreaded wheat maltodextrin in them. Why can’t they use sugar? It’s natural and safe.
