The Adverts Are Driving Me Crazy!

I’m trying to watch the Tour de France on ITV4.

But there are so many adverts, I get so many interruptions, that I could be in trying to watch it in the middle of a main road.

Don’t you just hate it!

The worst is some loan company advertising loans at with an APR of 1971%. If they sell any, I wouldn’t have thought that even a spendthrift mug would get a loan at that rate!

One advert is for a deodorant. I had one other product in the company’s range. It has now gone in the bin and when I find, what the parent company is, then they’ll be on my non-preferred list.

I’d be happy to pay a subscription to get advert-free television!

Crass Commentary From ITV

When France scored their third goal against Switzerland, the ITV commentator said this.

Not for the first time, there really is a mountain between France and Switzerland.

That really is one of the most crass statements heard in a football commentary.

ITV And The BBC Disagree Over Fred’s Penalty

ITV’s commentators and experts thought that the penalty awarded to Brazil last night was correct. The BBC’s pundits were adamant Fred dived.

The Times this morning is saying that Fred was guilty. Type “Fred penalty” into Google News and most newspapers the world-over think it was a dive!

Brazil were lucky, as other decisions of the referee didn’t stand up to video scrutiny.

Let’s hope that the rest of the referees have been to Specsavers!

Is This The Most Annoying Advert?

Microsoft is coming under fire for their new TV advert as is reported here on the BBC. This is the first three paragraphs.

Xbox One owners are complaining that a new TV advert is switching their consoles on without their permission.

The ad – featuring Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul – has the actor say “Xbox On” near its start.

The instruction appears to trigger the machine’s Kinect voice/motion sensor, activating the console.

It won’t affect me, as I’ve never played a computer game in my life and I rarely watch adverts with the sound on. In fact, I watched the World Cup match last night, with ITV’s idiot commentary off, whilst listening to Radio 5 Live.

BBC Breakfast’s Pointless Move To Manchester

It may be a day of a minor political tremor, but today is illustrating how pointless it was to move BBC Breakfast and probably many other programs to Manchester.

All of the major politicians are of course in Westminster, so Bill Turnbull is in London with Louise Minchin sitting almost by herself in the North, with a few lightweight guests. It is showing, it is a bad recipe for a good programme.

The sooner the BBC does the right thing and moves BBC Breakfast back to London the better.

Is Putin Watching?

I’m watching the Eurovision Song Contest. But is Putin? Or has he just switched off the signal to all Russian sets, as a bearded drag act is representing Austria?

Remember Adolf didn’t need much of an excuse to invade Austria!

Welcome To Heidelberg

Up till now, I’d had extremely good weather on my trip.

But I was welcomed in Heidelberg, by one of the heaviest rain storms, I’d seen in a long time. I walked dripping wet into the Tourist Office and we had a big laugh about it.

So I immediately took a taxi to the hotel and instead of exploring Heidelberg in the evening, as I’d intended, I stayed in the hotel and had supper. But sadly the television didn’t even have CNN, as it seemed the rain had got into their satellite feed.

In fact, since I left Poland, I had been unable to find any BBC channels or France 24 on the television.

The Most Disastrous Television Channel Launch In History

In four days time on the 20th April, it will be the fiftieth anniversary of the attempted launch of BBC2.

I remember it well.  My family thought we’d give it a go, but then a power cut in West London changed everything.

The whole incident is reported here. Here’s the first paragraph.

Fifty years ago this weekend, BBC Two went on the air for the first time. Or rather, it was supposed to go on the air. In fact, a massive power cut wiped out the entire launch schedule and led to one of the most disastrous nights in broadcasting history.

It was supposed to be a spectacular opening night for BBC Two. In the end, it was a spectacular shambles.

When the history of television is written a hundred years from now, this night will have a strong chance to be the worst start to any channel ever.

However, the bad start probably gave the channel an awful lot of publicity.

You should remember that in the nineteen-sixties power cuts were a much more common occurence than they are now. The electrical network just wasn’t as good as it is today.

Sense On Farage Versus Clegg

I didn’t watch the debate last night, as I was watching the football and trying to make sense of my tiger photos.

This morning, I’ve read the report in The Times and especially the comments from readers. The latter are probably summed up by this one.

Good strategy of Tories and Labour to keep out of this playground spat.

Farage looks like (is) a man offering simple solutions to complex problems, which is appealing in a protest vote like the Euro elections, but he has nothing to say about actually running the country as potential PM, so will not get far in a GE when people really are paying attention and are worried about jobs, health, education, etc.

Clegg used it as an attempt (failed) to look statesman-like, but few have his appetite for more Europe, and even he didn’t seem convinced by his own arguments. He is a man whose time in the limelight has been and gone. Not many people will remember his name in a decade.

So it might well be that most people actually saw Farage versus Clegg as entertainment or perhaps a dangerous freak show.
