At Least There’s No Football Team Like Chastity Bumgardner

It is reported that Charlotte Green is to be the new voice of the football results on BBC Radio 5 Live.

let’s hope that she doesn’t fall into her other persona, where she is described in the Independent as the queen of corpsing. Here’s an extract.

Green almost lost it in 2000 during a story about a woman called Chastity Bumgardner. She had proved less resilient in 1997, however, when an item about the chief of Papua New Guinea’s armed forces, Major General Jack Tuat, led into a story about a sperm whale.

I suppose she might corpse if she got the classic East Fife 4 – Forfar 5, which can happen this year as they are both in Scottish Division One. The dates to note are the September 14 and January 25.

If you don’t believe anybody is called Chastity Bumgardner, just type it into Google and the true story is not funny at all.

You Can Go And Do It Yourself

There is an article in the comic of the Times today about Jamal Edwards and he uses this phrase and they say it could be his motto.

I like it! And it could have been my motto!

My father always used to say that we’re all the same, sitting on the toilet and to never be afraid of approaching anyone.

Moss Gathers A Few Stones

I couldn’t resist the wordplay, when I saw this article and picture in today’s Standard.

A Public Inconvenience

I thought this notice on a toilet was funny.  You may not!

A Public Inconvenience

A Public Inconvenience

It was actually in the Royal Academy.

The BBC Gets The Pronunciation Wrong

According to the BBC Six O’Clock News, Gateacre School has been closed because of the heat. The story is here on the Liverpool Daily Post site.

But the BBC pronounced Gateacre wrong, by effectively making the mistake of treating it as two words; gate and acre.

I made the very same mistake, when I first went to the city.

A Word Calls Up A Storm In Germany

My old German teacher; Frank Stabler, said that the German’s loved words and often joined them together to make long new ones.

But a new word imported into German from American English is causing a bit of a controversy.

The word is shitstorm and it was voted Anglicism of the Year in 2012 by German language experts, as is reported here.

It’s even been used by Angela Merkel, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it!

Ten Big Mistakes

This piece on the BBC web site lists ten of the greatest mistakes of all time. They do have one from the Liverpool Echo.

The Liverpool Echo, in a rare error, once described Violet, the mother of the Kray twins, as “Mrs Violent Kray”.

I disagree with the statement it was a rare error. Fritz Spiegl, wrote a whole book on the subject of errors in Liverpool’s evening paper.

One I actually saw, was when they referred to the 1697 Arab-Israeli War.

Knowing the city well, as I do, I was always a bit suspicious that some of mistakes in the paper were not as accidental, as many would believe!

Giles Coren On Pistachio Doughnuts

This was a classic comment from his restaurant review  in The Times on Saturday.

Oliphant, who had been here before, insisted I try the pistachio doughnuts and honey syrup, but all puddings taste like mashed sugar cubes to me and I ate it only out of politeness. For all I know, it may be the greatest pudding ever made. You’d need to ask a fat girl.

I feel like that about puddings too!

Two Quotes From Antonio Carluccio

The Times yesterday had two quotes from Antonio Carluccio.

Religion is hypocritical.

He says that he abandoned it forty years ago. With me it was probably nearly sixty, when I discovered how good science is.

Cooking is good for attracting girls.

He says he taught himself, as he couldn’t afford to go to restaurants.

I’m teaching myself, not because I can’t afford the restaurants, but because restaurants don’t cook what I like. As to whther it attracts girls, I couldn’t possibly comment.

And Now Thomas Heatherwick Coins A New Word

My Internet trawl for the New Bus for London, picked up this article in the Financial Times called Touched With Madeness about Thomas Heatherwick.

So many quirky ideas, may look good on paper, but can’t be made. His can, although he had a few early ones suffered from problems. But then so did Brunel’s.

Hence the idea that every idea and design should have the quality of madeness or the ability to be made.
