They’ll Have to Saw It Into Logs

I had to laugh at this story from the BBC web site, about how they are running out of toilet paper in New Jersey.

There’s an old ribald schoolboy or rugby club rhyme called In Mobile. One phrase is something like.

There’s a shortage of loo paper in Mobile.

So they’ll wait until it clogs,

Then they’ll saw it into logs in Mobile.

I can’t find the complete lyrics on the Internet.

Interestingly, the story was the second most read one on the BBC this morning.

The Tony Nicklinson Case

This is a very difficult case and Tony Nicklinson seems certain that he wants to end his life, as is reported here on the BBC.

I am not sure, how I would feel if I were in the same state as Mr. Nicklinson. In fact as I am not anywhere near in the same state, I don’t think I have any right to comment.

But I do have more experience in this area than most.

Over the last five years, two of my closest relatives have died in great pain from cancer. My wife, when she was near the end, had wished it could have been ended, whereas our son carried on until the bitter end, not wishing it could be terminated.

So I have witnessed two totally different reactions, from a mother and son.

If I am honest, my reaction might be closer to that of my son, but that’s only because I am a very stubborn person and tend to feel that if there is life there is hope.

i also wouldn’t want to put anybody in a position, that they did something against their conscience. I also wouldn’t do something like throw myself under a train, as I know the reality of that from stories told to C, by one of her clients. I also wouldn’t like to mentally upset someone, who was just doing his job.

I am rapidly coming to a conclusion.

Everybody should have the right to do what they think best!

And no so-called religious man or politician has any rights over my choice. Years ago though, when I was down, but not suicidal, I spoke for twenty minutes or so with the Rev. Chad Varah. His advice saved our marriage.  But then they don’t make them like him any more.

So to return to the Tony Nicklinson case.  I feel that if he wants to end his life, then that is up to him. Provided of course he is of sound mind and capable of making a rational decision.

Interviews Before Execution

This article on the BBC web site, puts a whole new slant on reality television.

We’re back to the public executions at Tyburn that finished in the last 18th Century. The list on Wikipedia of those who were executed there, includes Oliver Cromwell, who was actually posthumously executed, after exhumation of  his body from Westminster Abbey.

THe land of the free – unless you’re female

Janice turner is on form in The Times today, with an article, which has the headline above.

It is summed up by this early paragraph.

How bizarre it is to watch the United States — the upbeat, future-focused wellspring of all things exciting and new — tear itself apart over contraception. America, capital of the global porn industry, teen pregnancy gold medallist, progenitor of Madonna and Gaga, having its presidential election defined by the morality of birth control.

Apparently, the United States is making it much harder for women to get contraception and has gone totally against people planning their family. Especially if you’re poor.

Even countries as Catholic as Ireland and Italy have seen that contraception is one of those things that creates a better society.

So does the United States want to create a worse country for its poor?

Obviously, they need a lot of male children to fight their wars and female ones to care for the injured.

The Tragic Death of two Hostages in Nigeria

Italy and the UK seem to be falling out badly over Britain’s failure to give warning that they were taking action. Read about it here on the BBC.

Robert Fox in the Standard says we are right and takes a strong line to say so.

This is an except from his report.

To have given advance warning of the rescue raid would have been to court further disaster.

The smuggling mafias of Nigeria undoubtedly have direct dealings with the Boko Haram terrorists who took the two engineers last May. They would pick up rumours of a possible rescue, particularly if it had to be delayed even for a day or so.

The information would have got out, either in Italy or in Nigeria or both. Some Italian commercial organisations and self-appointed go-betweens might then have tried to raise ransom for Mr Lamolinara.

A number of Italian hostages have been ransomed in several world trouble-spots, including Nigeria,

in recent years. Few national governments are as hard line on not paying ransom as the UK.

There is a lot more in the same vein here.

The fact that we don’t pay ransoms, is a policy I totally agree with.

Hedge Funds Won’t Take Haircut

An eminent Oxford Academic, has just said on the BBC that hedge-funds hold 4.4% of Greek debt, which they bought late and they won’t be taking any haircut.

Does this mean that Greece is back on the slippery slope to bankruptcy?

Angela Merkel on Greece

Well not really, but someone purporting to be her has tweeted.

I’m glad I’ve solved the Greek crisis and I look forward to solving it again next week.

Very funny!  But it may well be true!

The New Kings Cross Station Opens on the 19th

On of the largest building projects in London hits a big milestone on Monday, the 19th with the opening of the new reception area at Kings Cross station.  Before that though drinkers will get a new pub called the Parcel Yard, next Wednesday.

They do seem to be going to hit their target.  In one of the pictures, you might just see the working destination board.
