Let’s Stop Smoking At The Top
I am a militant anti-smoker. You will be, if you’ve lost a son because of his smoking. They’ve just had a government minister on 5 Live starting another campaign.
But it needs an example at the top of society!
Why not state on the ballot paper for all elections, whether the candidate is a smoker or not! I would never vote for a smoker!
The Most Beautiful Word In The German Language
according to The Times
Vergangenheitbewältigung
has recently been voted the most beautiful word in the German language. According to this article in Wikipedia, it can be described as the struggle to come to terms with the past.
I read about this word in The Times, where Ben Macintyre is describing how the Germans will be publishing a new copy of Mein Kampf soon. It will be copiously annotated with footnotes to show where Adolf Hitler was just plain wrong.
Macintyre says that Germany has shown a way of defusing long standing problems, by letting historians tell the truth and suggests the approach could solve some of the major problems in the world, like the true nature of Stalin, the Falklands, Nagorno-Karabakh and the Senkaku Islands.
After all, when I learned Shakespeare at school, there were masses of footnotes and other annotations, which helped you understand the text and the age he lived in.
Steph McGovern Wears A Bustle
The BBC breakfast’s business reporter, Steph McGovern, looked like she was wearing a bustle. The black of her black and white dress. this morning was the same shade as the chair she was sitting on. From some angles, it looked like she was wearing an enormous Victorian bustle.
Or was it just a simple case of a “My bum does look big in this” picture.
Nokia’s Critical Handset Launch
Not my headline, but one on the BBC’s web site, that links you to this story.
Sadly, it’s not a new version of the legendary 6310i, that many want, but some smart phone that they don’t.
It’s apparently based on Windows 8. Come to think of it what’s with Vista that I use.
I’m no technophobhe, but developments in hardware and software should be like men and women. As people have developed, the next generation is always perfectly understood by the previous one.
Scotland To Bring In Same-Sex Marriage
I know it has been on the cards for some time, but it would appear that Alex Salmond has taken the plunge today in outlining his legislation for the coming year.
If Cameron doesn’t do what he wants to and legalise same-sex marriage in the UK, it would look like Gretna Green marriages will be making a comeback.
Current Account Fraud Rises
The Independent is reporting that current account fraud is rising.
I suppose this will only afect the man on the Dalston Omnibus, if the banks don’t make sure they check applications correctly.
The Netherlands Isn’t Just About Orange
This news item must be watched by all of the Dutch.
Or is red the new orange?
Wasting The European Court’s Time
The European Court is going to rule today on whether Christians were discriminated in the work-place. It’s here on the BBC. They’ve also wasted an hour on this morning’s phone-in on the subject.
Let’s face it, it’s easier to do this than actually work for a living.
I suspect though that if she exists, God takes a very dim view of all this legal work.
Hard Man Bruce Takes On Apple
According to the Sunday Times, Bruce Willis wants to leave all his downloaded music to his kids and the iTunes agreement doesn’t allow this.
Why would he want to do that?
Obviously, after he’s gone, he wants to have control of his kids’ musical taste.
How arrogant!
At least though for once, Apple have got it right.
Terrorism Can’t Stop This Woman
Martine Wright lost her legs in the July 7th, 2005 terrorist bombings in London. Since then she has got married and had a son.Today, she appeared in the British sitting volleyball team at the Paralympics. The story is here in the Standard.
I wonder if her inspiring story will appear on NBC.
