Engineering Open Heart Surgery

Not my words, but those of Linda Miller, describing on the Crossrail web site, the work being done to upgrade the Connaught Tunnel. The full article is here.

It may be an odd mix of words, but we all know what she means.

The Shard In The Afternoon Sun

I took these pictures deliberately this afternoon, with the sun directly behind The Shard from a DLR train on the way into Bank station.

It’s of course, breaking the rule of not shooting pictures looking directly into the sun.

The Woolwich Ferry By Foot

In some ways, I can’t go anywhere near the Woolwich Ferry without laughing, as one of the funniest things I ever saw was a sketch on Michael Bentine‘s It’s A Square World called the Night the Woolwich Ferry Sank.

Today, I crossed the Thames as one of a surprising numbers of foot passengers and took these pictures.

If I have a complaint, it’s that you can’t get on deck like you can on a Mersey Ferry and taking good pictures is difficult. I did take some other pictures five years ago, when I last drove across using the ferry.

Winding Through The Crossrail Works

Crossrail are building their rail line along the line of the old North London Line to North Woolwich.  Their blue fences were everywhere.

Some of the pictures were taken from a pedestrian bridge over the site and others were taken on that excellent photographic platform, a London double-deck bus.  In this case it was a 473, that goes from Canning Town station to North Woolwich, where the Woolwich Ferry berths.

Note how the Brick Lane Music Hall dominates the first part of the route.

St. Mark’s Church, Silvertown

This picture shows, what I think is St. Mark’s Church, Silvertown.

St. Mark's Church, Silvertown

St. Mark’s Church, Silvertown

It is just one of the many distinctive churches you can see from the DLR.

No visit to London is complete without a ride on London’s unique DLR. It may have been built on the cheap as a stopgap, but like Topsy it has grown and now is one of the stalwarts of London’s transport system. These are stations and local areas worth visiting.

Abbey Road for Abbey Mills and the Greenway. But not the recording studio!

Canary Wharf for the walks by the water and the shopping

Canning Town and East India for the River Lee and The East India Dock Basin

Greenwich for the Cutty Sark and Maritime Greenwich

Pontoon Dock for the Thames Barrier

Pudding Mill Lane for the Greenway and some of the best coffee in London

Royal Victoria for the Emirates Air Line

Woolwich Arsenal for the Royal Arsenal

Fyra Explained

I have just found this detailed explanation of the Fyra fiasco on the International Railway Journal.

The title of the article is “Fyra problems could be more political than technical” and it starts and finishes with the simple phrase, “What a Mess!”

We may create the odd mess in the UK concerning the trains, but usually it blows over in a couple of days as all the underlying technology is sound and managers and politicians come up with a quick solution.

To cap it all, isn’t the Fyra train one of the most ugly ones, we’ve seen in a long time?

Exploring The Woolwich Station Box

Berkeley Homes had the excellent idea of having an open day to show those that wanted the inside of the new Crossrail station box at Woolwich.

It was a very professionally organised visit and we had met in the Dial Arch pub and then walked down into where in a few years, trains will be either rushing through at up to 100 kph or stopping to drop off and pick up passengers.

I have called the two ends of the box, London and Kent.  The former is the western end and the next station is Canary Wharf, whereas the other is the eastern end that leads to Abbey Wood.

There are going to be some stunning pictures here, when the tunneling machines break through on their way from Plumstead to Canary Wharf.

Doing Her Mending On The Bus

I’ve seen women knitting on the Tube, but I haven’t ever seen anybody doing their mending on a bus before.

That is until today, when I saw a young lady sorting out some errant hem with a needle and thread at the front of the top deck of a number 30 bus.

It’s funny though, but I’ve never seen anybody doing serious embroidery on a bus or train!

Balloons Over Luxor

I remember a few years ago, standing on the balcony of the Winter Palace Winter Palace hotel in Luxor with C watching the balloons in the early morning sun. Neither of us had any desire to go up, although she did say I could go if I wanted. The made a magnificent site, as they floated over the land beyond the Nile.

Today’s balloon tragedy sets that beauty on a different plane.

I’m not saying I’ll never go in a hot-air balloon.  But I certainly wouldn’t unless there was only a couple of passengers and a pilot I knew personally. If you want to create any form of accident, lots of people who know nothing about it, is a good place to start.

Don’t Get Your Facts Wrong

In August 2011, Richard Ford, published a table in Modern Railways showing track access charges for the new IEP against the IC125 and IC225.

Unfortunately, he made a mistake in the figures.

Then a Government Minister then used the figures to answer a question in Parliament many months later, giving an answer that was plainly wrong.

Probably, this shows the reasons why you shouldn’t use that thinking technique beloved of idiots everywhere; cut and paste.

The real problem here, is that the Department of Transport civil servant, who made the mistake, is probably too precious to be disciplined.

But Roger gave him or her, a good kicking in the article and has passed the real information to the National Audit Office.
