Richard Morrison On The Overground
Richard Morrison in The Times today has an interesting article on the London Overground. He did a complete circle and wrote about it. I particularly liked this bit.
It’s now possible to make a complete orbit of Outer London by rail. And I have rarely spent a more magical 80 minutes. Well, not on a train, anyway. In sleek air-conditioned carriages, you glide over wharfs and warehouses, dodge between highrises and shimmy past Victorian terraces, trendy penthouses, suburban semis, chic lofts, overgrown gardens and neat allotments. It’s like looking at the capital through the back door.
So if you can get hold of a copy of the Times 2 section today, have a good look at what he says.
You might decide to take a trip to Peckham! A doctor told me that the views from the multi-story car park by Peckham Rye station are spectacular.
Speaking English
Ed Milliband is reported as going to be making a speech saying that every Briton should speak English. It’s reported here in the Guardian
I think Milliband is being rather hypocritical. I assume, that when his parents arrived in the UK, their English skills were not a hundred percent.
Certainly, when my ancestors arrived in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, I suspect they’d have had difficulty taking to each other. Just as I do now, talking to some with English, Scottish and Northern Irish regional accents.
I think the episode shows that Milliband will pull any cheap trick to get votes.
Berlusconi’s New Girlfriend
Silvio Berlusconi has apparently got a new girlfriend according to this article in the Daily Telegraph and quite a few others.
The man’s rather a joke and let’s hope the Italian people see sense and keep him away from office. But they do seem to keep electing him!
London’s Best Toilets
I’m indebted to Time Out for this list.
I hadn’t realised that the Hunter S pub, had such novel toilets, which I think are featured in the photo in the article.
I have been to the pub, as it is the nearest to my house. But I’ve not used the toilets as it is probably just as quick to walk back home and use one of my own.
Getting The Temperature Right
It does seem, that the temperature affects me tremendously. My little meter from Maplin is showing a temperature of 18.6°C and a humidity of 47%. I have a few pains in my groin, left arm and where I had the tooth out, but compared to how I felt two months ago, it’s a lot better.
The weird thing last night was that my left arm and leg were very cold, despite being in a warm bed. I woke up to find that the humidity had increased by a few percentage points overnight
My gut is probably scoring 8/10, although my nose is running like a drain at times. If I go out with a couple of clean tissues, they are reduced to soggy lumps after a couple of hours.
It does strike me, that all this is so similar to my childhood, where I had long periods off school and constantly my mother was boiling cotton handkerchiefs on the gas stove in the kitchen. She also used to rip up old cotton sheets, so that I had enough to cope.
Where Shopping Trolleys Go To Rehab
The BBC this morning is running an article on BBC Breakfast this morning, about how shopping trolleys are rebuilt. I think this was the company here.
It’s certainly better than dumping them in the canal or the Paddington Basin.
London Moves To Licence Pedicabs
I have seen some horrific incidents with pedicabs and according to this report, it would appear that the Mayor and Transport for London are moving towards licencing them and driving the illegal ones off the road.
Having seen at first hand, how they contribute to jams in the West End, I think it’s about time too! Although, I’ve never ridden in one in this country.
How Not To Run A Prison System
This story from the United States is terrible.
I’m not saying, rape of women prisoners doesn’t go on in other countries, but you rarely here of it in Europe. I seem to vaguely remember, that when C used to visit HMP Holloway in the 1960s and 70s, that she told a story of a prisoner, who got pregnant.
I also think there are some countries in Europe, where few women are incarcerated.
The United States should bring its Justice and Prison up to the standards of the civilised world.
Where Is A Cat When You Need One?
Last night I had poached smoked haddock and egg for supper. And very nice it was too, as it was a whole undyed fish from the fish counter in Waitrose.
The only problem, was the fish was too large for my dish, so I had to trim it. After I’d eaten it too, there was also a large piece of skin.
After living with cats since about the 1970s, I just didn’t have a handy pussy to make good use of the left-overs.
There are cats round here, but they don’t seem to come up to my end of the road.
