The Anonymous Widower

A Surreal Experience

I have just come back from Walthamstow on a Victoria line train. I actually sat in the empty front carriage opposite to the big window. When the train stopped at I think, Seven Sisters, I became aware that eyes were watching me. Only then did I realise that the train had stopped, so that the four puppies in an advert on the station wall stared in through the window.

What are the chances of that happening?

I had to get the Victoria Line a day later, so I thought, I’d find the puppies! It wasn’t Seven Sisters, but Tottenham Hale.

Could this advert start a whole new trend, where some of the large wall adverts in stations are arranged so that the message is aligned with the window?

And Now We’ve Got A Blue Bus!

Adidas really know how to annoy Londoners, as they’ve now given us this disgusting blue bus.

And Now We've Got A Blue Bus!

And Now We’ve Got A Blue Bus!

The colour annoyed me so much, that I’ve decided to create the tag, Crap Marketing, in its honour.

Funding Circle Does Underground Adverts

The three big peer-to-peer lenders; Funding Circle, Ratesetter and Zopa, tend to rely on newspaper and magazine articles, and personal recommendations to spread their message.

So I was surprised to see this advert for Funding Circle on the Underground.

I don’t think occasional Underground adverts have the kiss of death that is associated with covering large numbers of buses with advertising. Could their bus advertising have anything to do with the falling reputation of Wonga. Or as with films, does blanket advertising of a product, show up the real turkeys?

Brian Redhead Was Right

He was quoted as saying that if television had been invented before radio, then radio would be the dominant medium, as the pictures are bretter!

Following the Tour de France today on ITV, I’m constantly switching to Radio 5, during the adverts ruining the program. So Brian is certainly right today.

The Adverts Are Driving Me Crazy!

I’m trying to watch the Tour de France on ITV4.

But there are so many adverts, I get so many interruptions, that I could be in trying to watch it in the middle of a main road.

Don’t you just hate it!

The worst is some loan company advertising loans at with an APR of 1971%. If they sell any, I wouldn’t have thought that even a spendthrift mug would get a loan at that rate!

One advert is for a deodorant. I had one other product in the company’s range. It has now gone in the bin and when I find, what the parent company is, then they’ll be on my non-preferred list.

I’d be happy to pay a subscription to get advert-free television!

Is This The Most Annoying Advert?

Microsoft is coming under fire for their new TV advert as is reported here on the BBC. This is the first three paragraphs.

Xbox One owners are complaining that a new TV advert is switching their consoles on without their permission.

The ad – featuring Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul – has the actor say “Xbox On” near its start.

The instruction appears to trigger the machine’s Kinect voice/motion sensor, activating the console.

It won’t affect me, as I’ve never played a computer game in my life and I rarely watch adverts with the sound on. In fact, I watched the World Cup match last night, with ITV’s idiot commentary off, whilst listening to Radio 5 Live.

A Black And Dirty New Bus For London

London’s buses are normally very clean. But this one wasn’t!

The red buses always look pristine.  So does the advertising vinyl attract the dirt?

The sooner these buses are returned to the proper red colour, the better.

God Said All London Buses Must Be Red

London’s buses have always been red in my memory and according to this piece, which is a response to the question of why London’s buses are red, they’ve been predominately red since the creation of the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933. Although buses from the London General Omnibus Company had started using the colour in 1907.

Today though I saw my first New Routemaster in a full black advertising livery.

I don’t think the bus suited the livery.

By the way, God or in London Transport’s case; Frank Pick, wouldn’t have liked this bus either, as it would grate with the overall philosophy he laid down for London’s transport system.

Has anybody else ever imposed their design philosophy on a city, as Frank Pick did for London to such a positive effect?

I wonder what he’d have thought of London’s New Routemaster.

One thing he would have liked was the process where Thomas Heatherwick was involved in the design of the bus. Pick in his years as London’s transport supremo, regularly hired the best architects and designers.

He was also prepared to back those, whose designs were unconventional, like Harry Beck‘s tube map, which has evolved to be one of the most recognisable maps in the world.

The Overground Features In The United States

This story from the Telegraph is priceless!

The Americans  needed some meaningful footage for an advertising campaign and chose some stock footage taken on the London Overground.

I should think all those concerned with London’s superb new railway, from management to drivers and passengers, are pleased, as it is rather flattering and in a way says, it must be one of the most photogenic railways in the world.

Why I’m Unlikely To Shop At Ocado!

Yesterday, I looked at Ocado, as a source of Celia gluten free beer.

All I did was look at the site and now every other site I look at shows me an Ocado advert.

So if they are going to hassle me, they can go and park their vans in the Thames
