Flying Solo On The Cable-Car
As I often do on a Sunday, I went over the Emirates Air-Line cable-car and then took the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf to have some late breakfast at Carluccio’s.
I got a gondola to myself, as the pictures show.
I wonder how long it takes before the rubbish recycling underneath the line is moved to a less obvious location.
The Crossrail Spoil Conveyors At The Limmo Site
The pictures show the conveyors to take spoil away from the tunnels being dug from the site on the Limmo peninsular.
The pictures were of course taken from the Emirates Air-Line cable-car.
A Call From The Cable-Car
As I was alone on the Emirates Air-Line yesterday, I called a friend in The Netherlands.
I don’t suppose, I’m the only person, who’s done that. But try doing that in a tunnel under the Thames.
A Circular Journey In The Snow
Very often on a Sunday I go across the Emirates Air-Line cable car, have a tea, coffee or lunch somewhere and then return home by a different route.
Today with all the snow, was just too good to miss.
My route was to walk to Dalston Junction station and then get a train south to Shadwell. I then took the DLR from there to the cable car. I came back via Canary Wharf, where I had a cup of tea and the London Overground back to the start.
The only problem, was that visibility wasn’t that good, but it was what the cable-car is for. It must have felt pleased to be in the land of its birth; Austria.
It Was Busy On The Cable Car
The Emirates Air-line was busy today, as the picture shows.

It Was Busy On The Cable Car
The caption says “Pharmacists – North London” if you can’t read it. It’s one of a series they show to the waiting passengers.
I suspect it was busy because of the clear weather. I took this picture looking towards the Heron Tower.

Looking Towards The City From The Emirates Air-Line
The Heron Tower is the one left of centre with the mast on top. There was also a good view of the Olympic Stadium and the Orbit.

The Olympic Stadium And The Orbit
My picture could be better though.
France Looks To Cable Cars
This article from the Guardian tells how France and other places are looking for cable-car solutions to urban transport problems.
As with many things, the way to a better future is to innovate and use good design.
Wheelchairs On The Emirates Air-Line
I’ve already commented about bicycles on the Emirates Air-Line, but today there were a few wheelchairs. One is shown here.
Obviously they can cope well, as the cable-car has lifts and wide cabins.
Is The Popularity Of The Emirates Air-Line Falling?
The Emirates Air-Line wasn’t as busy as I’ve seen it, but for a rather dim Sunday in October, it was doing brisk business. There was a big queue to get on. And this despite the fact that there was no DLRb to the northern terminal!
On the other hand, some critics are being very gloomy about the cable-car’s future.
I think it’s going to be fine, especially as the charges seem to have been updated with a sort of cash-back scheme for frequent flyers.
But then politicians will always play silly games.
Medway Thinks About A Cable-Car
According to this article, Medway is thinking about it’s own version of the Emirates air-line.
I doubt they’re the only place that’s thinking about it.
