Radio 5 Broadcasts in Evening Dress

Radio 5 is at an important golf dinner tonight and the reporters are broadcasting in evening dress.

Just like radio used to be before the Second World War.

Scots Put Wind Up Donald Trump

I can’t say I warm to Donald Trump and I don’t think, that I’d want to be anywhere near his golf development, as it will probably attract a lot of the sort of people, that I find odious.

So I read the report about his spat with the Scottish Parliament with interest and a small bit of pleasure. I’m not really in favour of wind turbines and especially those onshore, but offshore ones, if the economic case is there are a much better option. Let’s hope he gets a nice line of pylons across his golf course.

The Disgrace of Augusta

I quite like golf on the television, but I never watch the Masters at Augusta.

Like many people, I can remember when blacks could only be caddies or waiters. In fact the founder of the tournament insisted that in his lifetime, it was only contested by white players with black caddies.

At least now President Obama has weighed into the row about women being allowed to watch. But then he knows that with the issues of birth control and abortion likely to figure in the next election, it will help him get re-elected.

The Masters also have an interesting problem this year, in that one of their major sponsors, IBM, has a female Chief Executive. Will they go for money or ditch an outdated principle?

In The Times today, Matthew Syed, one of their most-respected sports writers, calls Augusta a laughing stock.

The Times also indicates that some Scottish golf clubs have a similar attitude to women and St. Andrews has a particular problem, in that the Principal of the University is female.

I also remember a friend, who couldn’t use a corporate membership at a golf club in the south of England. But being the man he was, he talked them round.

A Boost For All Widows

Darren Clarke’s victory in the Open is to be welcomed. I suspect too, that a lot of widows will find his win heartening.  I certainly do!

I do wish he’d give up the cigars though!

The Welsh Call-Up Their Secret Weapon

I thought they were pushing it to hold the Ryder Cup in early October, after this cold summer in the UK, but to hold it in Wales was taking real chances.

So off course the Welsh called out their secret weapon to soak the Americans and ruin their game.  It seems to be working as Europe was marginally ahead when play was suspended today.

To make things worse for the Americans, their waterproofs don’t work!

Reputedly, the Americans have been heard asking, if there is a Welsh manufacturer of waterproofs!

Apparently, they ended up buying the gear from ProQuip, who would appear to be a Scottish company.  But then they know about rain up there!

A Heartwarming Story From The Open

With just a few holes to go in the Open Golf, it looks increasingly like Louis Oosthuizen will win it. But behind the South African’s performance, there seems to be a story, that may feaure in tomorrow’s papers.

Oosthuizen’s caddy, Zack Rasego  is black and according to this report in the New York Times, it would appear that he came up the hard way, by working as a caddy at Sun City. Here’s a taste of what is said.

Rasego, who once caddied for the South African icon Gary Player, has been with Oosthuizen since 2003, when Oosthuizen’s management company helped put them in contact. They have developed a close working relationship and communicate frequently on the course in Afrikaans.

The faltering image of South Africa as a “rainbow nation” has regained some of its luster with the successful staging of soccer’s World Cup and a renewed sense of common purpose between the country’s black majority and white minority.

Rasego, who is one of the few black caddies on tour, and Oosthuizen, who is white, are aware that they reinforce that image but do not wish to focus on it.

“As South Africans, we are a rainbow team,” Rasego said. “But really it’s politics aside. It’s a sport. We cannot put politics into sport.”

Let’s hope nothing serious happens to them in the last few holes.

I Suppose I Could Watch the Golf

Weekends are bad for me, as I can’t drive, there is no pub within walking distance, so except for the stud staff, the paper lady and the postman, I won’t see anyone else for two days.

Not that I’m that bothered, as I will walk a bit in the fields with Lizzie.  The weather doesn’t look that good, so I’ll probably just watch the television.  Sport is mainly golf, although I do see that there is an exciting clash in the Russian Premier League, between Spartak Moscow and Rubin Kazan on ESPN, who report English football as bad as ITV. So I know that their Russian offering will be totally rubbish, with the commentators probably  in a cosy studio.

I do have other creative things to do though and I will report as the day progresses.

Tiger Woods and Jesper Parnevik

Golf is a very boring pastime.  It is not a sport and shouldn’t be in the Olympics.  But occasionally it gets livened up by the odd scandal or spat.  Tiger Woods has done something, but if most of us had done it, we would not make headlines even in the East Anglian Daily Times.  He should be left alone to sort his problems out.

Then Jesper Parnevik puts the boot in, suggesting that Tiger’s wife should have used a bigger club.

Just imagine them being the last pair in an important tournament.  Or playing each other as the last single in a very tight Ryder Cup.

Golf just got a whole lot more interesting!
