Lucky C Didn’t See These on Mykonos

C didn’t like birds, unless they had been properly plucked and cooked.

So she wouldn’t have liked these pelicans on Mykonos.

Pelicans on Mykonos

It’s funny but I couldn’t remember much of our holiday a few years ago on the island. Although we did visit Delos.

Pension Kalogera on Mykonos

I got picked up by a young lady on Mykonos and I suspect it wasn’t the first time she’d done it either.

But all she wanted to do was sell her Pension to me for the night.

Pension Kalogera, Mykonos

At forty euros for the night and free transport to and from the new port, I couldn’t complain. In fact, I think I should have stayed another night, as Mykonos was a better island at this time of year, than the next one, Tinos.

Does Vanessa Feltz Have Another Job?

This poster that was in many places on Syros, says it all.

I’ve no idea what it’s all about.

Walking Around Ermoupoli, Syros

Ermoupoli is the main town of Syros and it is not a typical town you expect on a Greek island. Here are some pictures.

As it has lots of ferries to the other islands, it is a place to consider as a base for a long stay in the Greek islands.

The Obstacle Course That is Athens

I have said before that I have found that the traffic in Greece regard zebra crossings as killing grounds, but then the pavements in Athens aren’t much safer, if you look at this picture.

Typical Athenian Pavement Hazard

Obviously, a vehicle  has driven over this drain cover.

To be fair to the Greeks, the walking was much easier on all the islands I visited.

The 2004 Olympic Site in Athens

I’d been to three Olympic sites before Athens; Moscow, Montreal and Barcelona. The first two were not in good states, although Barcelona was fairly good, but Athens wasn’t good at all, as these pictures show, with their graffiti and general dereliction.

In some ways it was all very sad!

I hope London’s legacy is more positive! Let’s hope West Ham and the Wellcome Trust do better!

Views Of, Around and From the Acropolis

I took these pictures as I walked around the Acropolis on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday when I climbed it.

To climb the Acropolis is one of the must-do things in Athens.

The Athens Metro

The Athens Metro is fairly modern, as a lot of it was built for the 2004 Olympics. But beware, if you’re visiting the city in the next few months, that a large section of the original line 1 is being rebuilt. No-one seemed to know, when it would be fully reopened.

It is an efficient, if very busy system and you can buy a 24-hour ticket for just 4 euros.

I liked these seats I saw on one of the stations.

Seats on the Athens Metro

Quirky and easy to see.  But I don’t know what Health and Safety would say as they appear not to be fixed down.

They also indicate which way the escalators are going.  London Underground please note!

Gluten Free in Greece

In some ways being gluten-free in Greece is easy.  On my recent trip, I found several restaurants that could do me an excellent gluten-free meal.

I had no trouble in Athens, Syros or Mykonos and Tinos for lunch, but it turned a bit dodgy on Sunday evening on the last island.

I think it was partly due to the early time in the season, but there wasn’t really any restaurants open on my last night in Greece.  As I was catching an early boat in the morning, back to Athens, I skipped supper.  It didn’t really matter, as I’d had a large moussaka, for lunch.  As I didn’t have any reaction to it,  I can assume it was safely gluten-free, as the owner had assured me. And as moussaka should be!

It was on the boat this morning that I was reduced to drinking coffee and eating jce cream again, as that was all that was safe. There was no fruit, but I did have two bananas with me, that were the only gluten-free snack in the supermarket at Tinos.

At Rafina I got a bus to the airport and bought a ticket to London on easyJet, as it was a quarter of the cost of a BA one. But there was nothing that wasn’t gluten-free at the airport.  Not even any chocolate or fruit.

Since I last few easyJet a few years ago, their menu has broadened, but not in the gluten-free area, although on some flights there are halal and kosher dishes.  I have a feeling one of the latter might be gluten-free, but it didn’t say so.

In the end it didn’t really matter, as I was home around six and had plenty of time to pop to Carluccio’s in Upper Street.

I think next time, I need some sun, I’ll go to Italy.

On previous trips, I’ve often bought sesame biscuits and I can buy them in my local deli.  But I didn’t see any anywhere! Why?

The Ford Transit Connect

You see these vans all over Europe, but I can’t remember seeing one here in Greece.  Is it because they are made in Turkey?
