How Siemens Gamesa Could Give Coal Plants a Second Life

This article on Greentech Media is a must-read as it makes you think. This is the sub-title.

The ETES thermal battery can offer coal plants a new life as heat and power storage hubs. The first customer for a full-size version could be on-board as early as next year.

It talks about the philosophy of reusing coal-fired power station sites and some of their equipment like turbines.

It is an idea much more applicable to countries like the US and Germany rather than the UK, as they still have lots of operational coal-fired power stations and and we only have a few.

I first came across this idea, when Highview Power were talking about their 50/MW/400 MWh installation in Vermont, which was to be built on the site of a demolished coal-fired power station. The utility company and Highview were in that case just reusing the grid connection.

But then I’ve heard of other energy storage systems using old power station sites.

And not to forget that Highview Power’s installation at Carrington is close to a gas-fired power station.

The Most Important News Of The Day

It has nothing to do with that soon-to-be-ex President across the Pond, except that he would brand it a waste of money and a fantasy.

If he did call it a fantasy, he’d at least know something about fantasy.

This article on Recharge is entitled Work Starts To Build World’s First Commercial Liquid-Air Energy Storage Plant.

These are the first two paragraphs.

Work has started to build the world’s first commercial liquid-air energy storage facility near Manchester, northern England, along with a visitor centre that aims to turn the pioneering project into a tourist attraction.

A joint venture between UK-based Highview Power and independent solar/natural-gas plant developer Carlton Power will build and operate the 50MW/250MWh “CRYObattery” — which may later be expanded to add more storage — in the village of Carrington, close to Manchester United’s training ground.

The visitor centre will open in the first quarter of 2021, with the plant planned to start operation in 2023.

  • That seems to me to be an ambitious time-scale.
  • On the other hand, the plant appears to be composed of well-proven readily-available components, so it will not be too challenging.

Whether Trummkopf likes it or not, construction of the second plant in the Democratic-voting state of Vermont, will surely be starting in the near future.

  • He would like the fact that at 50MW400 MWh, the American battery is larger.
  • He wouldn’t like the fact, that it is replacing a coal-fired power station.
  • It will give eight hours of full-power as opposed to Manchester’s five.
  • As both plants are rated at 50 MW, I suspect the two plants are identical on the energy generation side.
  • Vermont would just have more tanks to store the liquid air.

It is my view, that these two, will be the first of many.

How Good Is ‘Freezing Air’ The Solution For Electricity?

The title of this post is the same as that for this article on Energy News 24.

The article discusses Highview Power’s proposed 400 MWh installation in Vermont, where they are installing lots of renewable power sources and need a way to store the energy, which is partly wasted.

Read the article and especially the last sentence.

Vice President Jason Burwen Energy Storage Association said the capacity of the plant would be “on par with today’s largest grid energy storage projects under construction.” He said it would be the equivalent electricity needed “to power maybe 50,000 homes for eight hours.”

Are the British coming?

The Highview Power system to me is a blindingly obvious simple idea, based on proven technology, that has been used for many decades. Add in clever computing technology to control it and blend it with renewable energy and every wind or solar farm, tidal power station and sizeable town or city should have one, where there is a site the size of a football pitch.

Prowling for Solutions To Unleash Renewable Energy

The title of this post, is the same as this article on Toolbox.

It is a good summary of the best methods of storing renewable energy without using chemical batteries.

Gravitricity, Energy Vault and Highview Power are all mentioned.

This last paragraph, explains some of the philosophy behind Vermont looking seriously at Highview Power.

Vermont may well be tempted by liquid air energy storage because of its flexibility — simply requiring a two-acre site anywhere. One possible location could be near an abandoned power station. That’s a beautiful solution because the transmission lines that once transported the electricity from the plant are built and ready to use in the renewable era.

Note that a two-acre site is slightly smaller than a football pitch.

It is rather elegant to replace a coal- or gas-fired power-station with an environmentally-friendly energy storage system on the same site, which effectively does the same job of providing energy.

The article doesn’t mention employment, but surely many of the existing workforce can be easily retrained for the new technology.

Are The British Going To Rescue Vermont?

This is the sub-title of the article.

Such energy storage technology could help relieve congested transmission lines in places like Vermont.

It certainly is a must read, about the possibilities of energy storage and Highview Power in particular.
