The Anonymous Widower

The Olympic Site Is Protected

I took this picture at the start of the Greenway just as it crosses the canal at the western site of the Olympic site, close to Hackney Wick.

A Pill-Box by the Olympic Site

Two guys in this pill-box with a couple of PIAT anti-tank guns could stop anything.

Will Aston Martin Benefit from the Royal Wedding?

To many the iconic picture of the royal wedding is William and Catherine driving away afterwards in his father’s 1969 Aston Martin.

Aston Martin must be laughing their socks off!

Another Truck Runs Into a Coach

There was another horrendous crash on the two lane section of the M11 last night, in which two people were killed and many were injured.

There was also the Sudbury train crash, where a truck crossed the line and derailed a train and the incident where a cement mixer fell on top of a train.

You have to question why accidents like this happen.

When I used to fly private aircraft, I had to take various competency checks every year and professional drivers do a lot more. Do the drivers of trucks have to take these sort of checks?

Also, as many drivers are from outside of the UK and may well be licensed in their own country, do they have proper checks?

But we mustn’t get xenophobic here, as there have been several accidents involving British coaches on the continent.  There was also at least one in the UK, where the driver had been thought to be drinking.

I think that the best we can do at present, is to analyse all of the accidents and make recommendations.

One thing that is a common factor in many accidents involving trains and other vehicles is level crossings. And this is not just a British problem, but one that occurs everywhere there are level crossings. I stood by the level crossing at Northumberland Park last week and was surprised at how many times it opened and closed in the half hour I was there.  No-one tried anything silly while I was watching, but this is a classic crossing that could be closed to road traffic, as there is a bridge fairly nearby. It might cause inconvenience for a couple of months, but closing the crossing, might save a few lives. How many other crossings could be closed?

Today’s accident happened on an unlighted two-lane section of motorway. Should we light more of the dangerous sections of roads?

Other factors are also involved in many traffic accidents.

We should analyse and act!

The Real Losers From the Delayed Honeymoon

The decision of the royal newly weds to delay their honeymoon is a really intelligent one.

It will allow all the fuss to die down and they can enjoy a few days of rest and recuperation on Anglesey, if they want to. I suspect too, that the good people of Ynys Mon, will put their own protective cordon around the couple to make sure the only interesting pictures the paparazzi get are of sheep. I know from experience of Suffolk, that when outsiders start to pry and invade privacy, they are given very short shift.

I suspect though that the tabloids and the celebrity magazines, have spent a fortune to spot where the couple are going.  And it has got them precisely nothing, except a large bill. When the couple finally sneak off, the gutter press will hopefully be caught napping again.

I suspect they may have another cunning plan up their sleeves.

Good for them!

That Wasn’t a Goal

The Chelsea equaliser I’ve just seen against Tottenham wasn’t a goal. The ball appeared not to cross the line and the referee was unsighted. So Spurs should have been given the benefit of the doubt.

So I may be biased, but then if there was goal line technology we would have known for certain.

The Battered Stick Together

When you’ve been through what I have, you tend to follow others, who’ve triumped over adversity.

Although, C & I bred racehorses for many years, I don’t follow racing much, these days.

But I was pleased to see a report in The Telegraph that Henry Cecil has the favourite for the flat season’s first  classic, the 2,000 Guineas. Henry has been battling cancer for some years and where lesser men would have crawled into a hole and hid or given up altogther, Henry has just kept going.

I shall be putting a couple of pounds on Frankel.

Who’d Have Thought It?

I’ve just been to get the paper and it was a bit of a surprise to see that the largest pile of newspapers in the shop was for the Guardian.

I thought that all of that was below them!
