A Class 755 Train PowerPack Car

The picture shows the PowerPack car of a Class 755 train.

Note.

  1. The two covers to give access to the two engines on each side of the car.
  2. The shared Jacobs bogies between the cars.
  3. The pairs of shock absorbers between cars.

The Jacobs bogies and the shock absorbers are probably used to help give the trains a smooth ride. The Wikipedia entry for Jacobs bogies says this.

Instead of being underneath a piece of rolling stock, Jacobs bogies are placed between two carbody sections. The weight of each car is spread between the Jacobs bogie. This arrangement provides the smooth ride of bogie carriages without the additional weight and drag.

After my half-dozen or so rides in Class 745 and Class 755 trains, I wouldn’t be averse to seeing a lot more of these trains in the UK.

Morden South Station – 24th December 2019

These pictures were taken on the 24th December 2019, at Morden South station.

The station is based on an island platform like many on the Sutton Loop Line.

The station doesn’t have step-free access, but I suspect, that a lift could be installed between the tunnel and the island platform.

The Tate Is Closing

I have just received this e-mail from the Tate, where I am a member.

For over 120 years we’ve been welcoming people to our galleries, to enjoy great art from around the world. However, the welfare of our members, visitors and staff must always come first.

That’s why we are closing Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives from this evening, 17 March until 1 May. We will be reviewing this and keep you updated.

We believe that access to art is a universal human right. Now more than ever, art can lift our spirits, brighten our days and improve our mental health. So whilst our galleries are shut, we’ll be sharing some ideas for how you can still enjoy the best of Tate wherever you are.

Thank you for your support and for being part of Tate. We hope you will bear with us during this period of disruption. If you have tickets to upcoming events, we’ll be in touch soon. And of course we will extend your Membership for the duration of the closure.

We don’t know yet when our galleries will reopen, but we look forward to welcoming you back when they do.

Until then, stay safe and take care. We’ll be in touch soon.

Best wishes,

Maria Balshaw
Director, Tate

It is not unexpected.

Clean Air For All: Lampposts To Charge Electric Cars

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on The Times.

This is the introductory paragraph.

An “electric avenue” has been developed where lampposts have been converted into chargers for battery-powered cars.

The project has been led by Siemens.

Surely, all lampposts should have an electric car charging point.

A Regret

I am limiting my travel because of COVID-19 and only using Shanks’s pony, so I will not be able to provide one of my pictures of the chargers.

BCRRE Recognised for its HydroFLEX Work

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on H2-View.

This is the introductory paragraph.

The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) at the University of Birmingham has been recognised in the Guardian University Awards 2020 for its work in the UK’s first hydrogen powered train, HydroFLEX.

From my monitoring of the various hydrogen developments and their prominence, it appears that all questions are being explored and that hydrogen will have an extensive future on both rail and the road.

Aerodynamic Research Facilities Enhanced

The title of this post is the same as that of this article on Railway Gazette.

This is the introductory paragraph.

The University of Birmingham’s Transient Aerodynamic Investigation facility at Derby’s Rail Technology Centre business park has reopened following a £1·5m renovation.

It is certainly the start of a must-read article.

It is interesting, that Bombardier have been a user of the facility. As I have said before, the Aventra seems to have good aerodynamics, so was this facilty used to improve them?

Demand For Green Offices Will Soar To Meet Carbon Targets

The title of this post is the same as that of this article in the Business section of The Times.

This is the introductory paragraph.

London will need much more “green” office space by 2030 to meet sustainability pledges made by businesses that are coming to the end of their leases.

The article then makes these points.

  • Looking at lease expiry dates, JLL believes that eight million square feet of green offices are needed by the end of the decade.
  • This is partly brought about by pressure from staff, shareholders and customers.
  • Microsoft and Astrazeneca want to be carbon-negative by 2030.
  • JLL’s research shows that sustainable buildings command higher rents.
  • Bloomberg’s office block is one of the best.

It was certainly an article worth buying the paper for.

Conclusion

With London office space sustainable offices are good for property companies.
