Is Beckham Going to the Olympics?

He may be past his sell-by date at 37, but I’m coming round to the view, that Stuart Pearce may pick David Beckham for Team GB at the Olympics.

But he could motivate a young team and all the hype could be a feint to install him as a coach. Let’s face it both Beckham and Pearce are bright enough to fool most of the people most of the time.

Everything so far in the way we’ve organised the Games has been very much conventional, so a surprise of the positive sort would be welcome and would unsettle other teams.

In the meantime, everybody should wait.

Beckham Makes It to North Korea

Pehaps the most surprising news over Christmas, was the news that Bend It Like Beckham was shown, albeit heavily edited, on North Korean television.

What odds would you get on David himself going to North Korea this year?

Not very good, I suspect!

Beckham Plays it Straight!

My late wife always reckoned that Seb Coe’s speech in Singapore to win the 2012 Olympics for London was one of the best speeches she’d ever heard and she’d heard a lot as a barrister for some really hopeless causes.

Today, David Beckham has given a wonderfully crafted press conference in Zurich, as England try to win the World Cup for 2018.  If we don’t win, we won’t be able to blame him! But then he’s got too much London and Essex in his DNA not to give it his best shot.

They even asked him whether he had an invite to the Royal Wedding! That’s the main reason of course why we won’t win.  Prince William and Kate Middleton won’t be inviting Sep Blatter!

Sir Alf Will Be Turning In His Grave

If you thought Algeria was bad, then today’s match against Germany was even worse!

You pay a manager £6,000,000 a year and the team serves up this tripe! So I know the first head to roll.

I suspect though the old farts at the FA will duck the decisions they should make and blame everybody except themselves.  Endless reports have told them what to do; like cut down the size of the commitees that don’t manage our national game, stop employing people who don’t perform, that they then have to fire at great expense, get the Academy at Burton built and make sure Wembley has a playing surface worthy of the best footballers.  Perhaps too,  they should also make sure that the Premier League creates a few more world beaters, like the acadamies in Italy and Germany do. But then you don’t mess with the Premier League! They mess with you and give you crumbs if you’re lucky.

So who should replace Fabio? I watched the whole of the match and saw the faces of David Beckham and Stuart Pearce.  Even they couldn’t do anything! But give them the authority with most of the old farts removed and Pearce as manger and Beckham as the enforcer and things might just work out.

Beckham Makes The Times Leader

Yesterday, David Beckham made a leader in The Times.

This illustrates the power of the man and the respect most of us feel for him.

I saw it most in Belarus, when I went to support England.  The amazing cheer when he came on, was not just from the England supporters but also from those of Belarus.

I sometimes wonder how we’ll all see Beckham in say twenty years time.  He will surprise us all.

Beckham to the Rescue

The English World Cup Bid is in trouble.  Just too many egos and too many faceless bureaucrats.

So today, David Beckham has been pressing flesh and smoothing up to those that make the decisions in FIFA.

He’s a star.

Beckham’s Beard

David Beckham had grown a beard for the latest England game.  He was asked if it was a new fashion statement or campaign.

He game the honest answer that ‘He was just too lazy to shave!’

That’s why I’ve had a beard for over forty years.  I don’t think my youngest son, who is 37, has ever seen me without one!

My beard once featured in a letter to the PM program on Radio 4.
