BBC to Fund S4C

In times of cuts difficult decisions need to be made.

S4C, the Welsh channel costs about £100 million a year to run and is funding now going to be transferred to the BBC.  In other words, a proportion of my licence will be used to create programmes that in many cases have an audience that can’t be measured.

If the Welsh are so keen on the Channel, then surely funding should come from the Welsh Assembly! But they are too intelligent to fund such a bloated dinosaur, when there are much more worthy projects about.

Pamela Puts on a Show

I watched Strictly Come Dancing and I was very impressed with the performance of Pamela Stephenson, who got the highest total score from the judges.

So my bet of £4 on Pamela to win is still running.

Not Just an Obituary in The Times, but a Leader Too!

I wonder what a young Norman Wisdom would have said, if that many years later, when he died, he would not only have an obituary in The Times, but a leader inside the cover, praising his life and work.  But then he was one of those small, tough men, who often come out on top despite what the world throws at them!

There have been so many memories on the TV and radio in the last day or so, about one of Britain’s most-loved comedians. I particularly liked the stories of such as Chris Hollins, who is far too young to have seen the films or the classic TV sketches of the 1950s and 1960s, but remembers him from the match when England played in Albania.

I think we always forget what a good actor he was. He won a Bafta for a start!  But I do wonder what would have happened if the film he had written about Benny Lynch in the 1950s had ever been made.  As someone who could box, Wisdom saw himself playing the great Scottish boxer, but then the film industry in those days of the 1950s, saw him as a comic and not a serious actor.  Some years ago, I read about this part of his life in the sports pages of The Daily Telegraph. It was one of his regrets in life, that the film was never made. Perhaps it should be!

Racing Shoots Itself in the Foot Again!

I wanted to watch the races from Longchamp today, but it is not available on free-to-air television, probably for the first time in several decades. So there is an hour on BBC2, but most races will not be shown live.

It is on Racing UK, but you have to subscribe and the number of races I want to watch is not worth that!

But let’s face it, it really takes stupidity with a sport like horse racing, to have two TV contracts, one which shows some meetings and the other the rest!

So I’ll watch the football!

Pamela’s Odds Are Coming Down!

I got 50-1, but now after tonight’s performance, she’s down to 22-1.

I think I got value!

My Bet For a Winner is Pamela Stephenson

The BBC has just announced the line-up for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

My money is on Pamela Stephenson, who showed she can dance, years ago in Not The Nine O’Clock News But perhaps not in the way required!

Who’d Have Thought of it in Bury St. Edmunds?

Bury St. Edmunds is not thought of a town for anything risque! It did once have an eBench in the Abbey Gardens, but who’d have thought a wine bar would mix sausages and burlesque in the town?

But they have according to the local daily paper, the East Anglian Daily Times.

I had that Black Stig in My Kitchen!

The original Black Stig, Perry McCarthy, once came to see me about a business venture, I was involved with.  He was a likeable guy, talked a lot of sense and I regret slightly that we didn’t meet again.  I wish him well in whatever he is doing now.

I can still see him standing in my kitchen by the fridge and every time I get milk out with someone else standing in the same place, I have a little smile.

Coast is in Denmark

Coast is one of my favourite telvision programs.  Today was all about Denmark.  I’ve been to the country a couple of times, although one was just to get a connection to Oslo.

My next-door neighbour at the football is also a man who has a Danish father, who had been trapped in the UK  at the start of the Second World War.

The program was about the Danish coast and agriculture, but with a fair amount of Second World War and other history thrown in. They also visited Heliogoland, which seems a fascinating place. A large part of the program was about how the Danes got most of their Jews to safety in Sweden.  They didn’t mention King Christian X, who surely became one of the unlikely heroes of the war.

I doubt many monarchs would have did what he did to give support to his people.

What Shall I Do Tomorrow?

Today is not really the problem, as there is plenty of good sport on television, with the Grand Prix and some football. But it is tomorrow!

I thought that I might like to go to the cinema in Haverhill, as it would be possible with a taxi both ways.

But having seen the list of awful American films they are showing, that is a complete no-no.  Most seem to be in 3-D, which is totally appropriate for someone with bad eyesight.  I should also say that this relives some really bad Bank Holidays in the past, where C and I would vargue because there was nothing to do. Often we’d go shopping in London or Bluewater, or perhaps go and have a meal.  But I can”t do that as I’ve got no transport and must stay here in my beautiful and lonely prison.

I could go to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, as I haven’t been for many years.

I can’t even do some of my new found love and time filler; cooking. I’m miles from the nearest shop and that would again mean a taxi both ways, just to get the things I need.

So I’ll just stay here and rant at all the people , who’ve said they’ll visit me and never have!

But at least there’s Tuesday to look forward to!
