HS2 Is A Good Idea
It must be as according to The Times, golfers are leading the protest against the line.
Abramovitch Revolves The Door Again
Roman Abramovitch has sacked another manager at Chelsea. What a way to run a football club? Especially, as it seems to be generally accepted that stability in football leads to success.
I suppose the only winner is Roberto di Matteo, as he’ll probably be well paid.
But it doesn’t alter the fact that Chelsea are rapidly becoming a joke in the mind of many!
Some of the statements on the BBC’s web site get straight to the point.
Colin Bundred has said “How is it possible to be Champions of Europe and the joke of the football world at the same time? Sad really.”
And then Post and In give it the treatment.
I wonder if Roman Abramovitch is going to sue everybody who is criticising him on Twitter. If he is, every lawyer in the UK, will be rubbing their hands. I suspect the Americans will lend us a few lawyers if we need help.
Abu Qatada Is A Joke
The only people who take such as Abu Qatada seriously are the police and the government. And a very few of his supporters!
He should be treated as the silly joke he is and only mentioned in the media, when he turns up in Court on a serious charge.
The phone-in on BBC this morning, just gives his extremist views the oxygen of publicity.
The one positive thing we could do is allow intercept evidence to be used in all Court cases. My late wife felt it would have helped a lot in some of the more grizzly divorces she did.
Sue The Twits
It is reported on the front page of The Times, that Lord McAlpine is going to sue those who might have defamed him on Twitter. It’s also here in the Telegraph.
If I were him, I’d find the most well-known twit on the list with lots of money and sue just them. It wouldn’t cost me a fortune, but the returns could be high.
C Would Be Laughing Loudly Today
My late wife would be laughing very loudly today at some of the legal stories in the papers.
The Times has a story about the large increase in the number of litigants-in-person and how they are clogging up the court system. They were often C’s nightmare, as they delayed cases and put up her client’s bill.
The Telegraph has a story about another couple, who’ve wasted all their savings on who has custody of their two children. C had done many cases like this, although this has a new twist in that the couple are lesbian. At least in this case, the kids seem to know what they want to do and hopefully are old and sensible enough to rise above it all.
You do get the impression, that some people shouldn’t get married and certainly shouldn’t have children.
Newsnight In A Twist
The BBC’s flagship news program has really got itself in a twist lately.
They may or may not have libelled a politician and they really got it wrong with Jimmy Savile.
When she was a pupil, C did one pupillage in chambers specialising in libel. Every night, someone from chambers used to read the next day’s copy of a well-known tabloid to make sure they hadn’t defamed anybody.
Where was that check in Newsnight?
The Detective Who Broke The Rules
The conviction of Christopher Halliwell for the murder of Sian O’Callaghan is of course to be welcomed. But reports, like this one on the BBC, show that the detective who solved the murder broke a few rules. I would appear too, that Halliwell knew something about the murder of Becky Godden, as he led the p0lice to her body.
It is always said that difficult cases make bad law and this case would appear to have shown up a few faults in the rules by which the Police work.
But does it?
In this case, no-one died or was physically hurt because of what the detective did, so many will be calling for a change in the law. On the other hand, I don’t remember a similar case.
So perhaps it shows we’ve got it about right.
Theresa May Does The Right Thing
Theresa May has done the right thing in my view and also that of several eminent legal minds. Read about it here on the BBC’s web site.
Especially, as it appears it is all covered by Article 3 of the much-derided Human Rights Act.
But why did Gary McKinnon have to endure ten years of hell?
Only because Tony Blair was sucking up to Dubya.
The Silliest Legal Case In The World
The BBC is reporting that the Naked Rambler has been released from prison. He is now walking somewhere around Scotland in the nude.
It must be the silliest legal case because it’s been going on for years now. The article contains this comment.
John Scott QC, chair of the Howard League for Penal Reform in Scotland, says the bill to keep Gough in prison for so long must have reached hundreds of thousands of pounds. It costs about £40,000 a prisoner a year, rising when an inmate is separated from others, and when he is repeatedly discharged and readmitted.
It’s funny, but why was he not arrested in England, but is having so much trouble in Scotland?
Perhaps he could be persuaded to walk somewhere else like North Norway or the Sahara Desert. Now that would be a naked challenge!
Or could the Scots not deport him to England and ban him from going north of the border!
The Lawyer Likes The New Bus For London
Lawyers get everywhere these days. They’ve even got an article in The Lawyer magazine about the New Bus for London.
