A Wee Club In The North East

Not my words, but those of Sir Alex Ferguson about Newcastle United as reported on the BBC.

He has a point as what trophies have Newcastle won since Ipswich Town won the old First Division Championship in 1961-62.

One day though, Sir Alex will say something that really gets him into trouble.

I’m Watching Celtic

As it’s a choice between Chelsea, Manchester United and Celtic, it’s a bit of a no-brainer really. Especially, as the two English clubs are losing.

The BBC’s North-Western Bias

I listened to all of the BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast Show this morning.  Only one of the Premier League matches was mentioned; Manchester United v Liverpool.

You’d have thought no other matches were being played!

The only other match mentioned was Crystal Palace v Doncaster because it had been called off.

So let’s hope no north-western team wins anything this year!

Liverpool Supporters Boo Evra

The Suarez affair has not shown Liverpool of their supporters in a good light. Watching the match today between Liverpool and Manchester United, there is a lot more booing of Patrice Evra.

I think, it’s going to need some sort of punishment to bury all of this.

Incidentally, it doesn’t seem that the supporters behaviour is not much better at Loftus Road, where Chelsea and John Terry are playing.

It wwould appear that we might be winning the battle against rscism in football, but now we have another one, where supporters use a racist incident to stir up trouble.

I Don’t Get These Football Colours

The Manchester United match was on in the background last night.  I thought they had scored, as the team in red had!

But it was Benfica!

Isn’t it about time that in important matches teams played in their proper colours!

But it’s all about money.  So if it’s about money, does that explain why a fairly small crowd turned up to watch Chelski on Tuesday.

Champions League Mania

Why is everybody getting so het up about a football match between two teams in which I have little or no interest?

The Times this morning carries a 16-page supplement, which just went straight in the recycling. Apparently most papers have these, so I suspect chip shops won’t be short of unread papers for their products.

I shan’t really be watching, because it’s on ITV and the coverage will be destroyed by the advert breaks. Insead, I shall be listening on the radio and might have the pictures in the background. It should also be noted that the TV is a few seconds behind the radio, so you always hear it first on the more important media.

My Hopes For Tonight

I was asked by a Manchester United fan last night, who I’m supporting.

Here are my thoughts as I put in a post to the BBC.

As someone, who spent his childhood on the terraces at White Hart Lane, at University supported Everton, and now support Ipswich, I could only give my full backing to the referee and hope that he gives the various cheats and divers the decisions they deserve.

I haven’t changed my thoughts since, but after Manchester United put Ipswich down with a non-goal, I really hope Barcelona do it in style.

Manchester United Set A Good Example

There are pictures and a long report in the Daily Mail about how Manchester United took the train to London for Saturday’s Champions League Final.

I can remember when football teams regularly took the train.  In fact on one trip down on a Saturday evening from Darlington, I shared a carriage with the Millwall team that has just beaten Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

Alex Ferguson and Twitter

Alex Ferguson is quoted today as saying that his players should abandon Twitter and go to a library and read a book.

Why Twitter appeals to the average football and idiots of all kinds, is that because the character limit is 140 characters. Books are generally much longer than this!

On the other hand Boris Johnson was quoted yesterday after his first experience of Twitter was that this character limit makes you think about how to say something concisely. But Boris is a man who knows his words well, even if he sometimes puts both feet in his mouth occassionally.

Perhaps this thinking idea, is what Sir Alex should instill in his players. Lawyers wouldn’t be too pleased, as it would close off the quite a few routes, like superinjunctions of trousering a lot of readies.

M1 Closed on Busiest Sporting Weekend

The M1 is closed on the busiest sporting weekend of the year, with two FA Cup semi-finals and the London Marathon.

But it probably won’t be as bad as it could be, as Manchester United fans won’t have much trouble getting up to Wembley from Surrey.

It does though illustrate the folly of not allowing an extra rail route into London from Manchester via the East Midlands.
