Am I Getting Better At The Waitrose Self Check-Outs?

I seem to be getting at working the self check-outs in Waitrose. Could my left hand be getting better?

I doubt it.  But I’m just learning to use it better!

It is certainly more use in typing!

I Can Only Take So Much Lettuce

For lunch today, I had some smoked salmon and one of Waitrose’s potato and egg side salads.  I don’t eat all the lettuce, but all the others bits like tomatoes and cucumber do get devoured.

So why do we put so much lettuce in a salad? Perhaps, it’s to feed our pet rabbits? I don’t have one!

A Coeliac Compares Islington and Highbury Corner Waitroses

I have two Waitroses close to me and both are just a single bus ride from the stop on my corner. The Islington store is at the Angel and the Highbury Corner one is just a littleWaitrose across the road from Highbury and Islington station.

I can get most things I need in  the Highbury Corner store, except for the goats’ milk and yoghurt, that I like.  They even have the Genius Gluten Free bread and a good selection of gluten-free cakes and biscuits.

The bigger store at Islington, is always a bit short and the bread is sometimes non-existent. They do generally stock some gluten-free beer, which I haven’t checked for at Highbury Corner.

A Big Red Taxi

This 29 bus was totally empty except for a postman going off shift and myself, as I took it away from Trafalgar Square.

A Big Red Taxi

But then it was mid afternoon. Afterwards, I went to Waitrose and Starbucks at the Angel and they were quiet too!

The New Little Waitrose at Highbury and Islington

It opened yesterday and I was impressed.

The only thing I couldn’t find of my staple purchases was the Waitrose goat’s milk. But surprisingly they had the Genius bread and the Genius fruit bread, which is rather difficult to get elsewhere. There was also gluten-free biscuits and cakes.

It will be a great help for me, as often I come out of Highbury and Islington station after coming home on the Victoria line. So at least I won’t starve.

I was impressed, and the average coeliac could do a lot worse round here. If anybody is going to the Olympics on the London Overground, it will be a good place to pick up a picnic.  You could even go round the corner and eat it in Highbury Fields, which is rather a smart little park.

Waitrose Comes to Highbury Corner

It’s not open yet, but a new little Waitrose is slated to open on July 24th at Highbury Corner.

I took this picture today and it shows they have a lot of work to do before the 24th of July.

That means I won’t have so far to go as it’s just four stops on a 277 or 30 bus. Especially on days like yesterday, when I went all the way to the Angel for just six items. The stop to return home incidentally is just outside.

It’ll be interesting where they go next, as they have the large branches at Jones Brothers on the Holloway Road and Eastfield at Stratford.

Who Ate All The Bread?

I took this picture of the gluten-free bread shelves in Waitrose in Islington

Who Ate All The Bread?

Obviously, they believe in a lot of choice for customers. Or are they following Marie Antoinette‘s philosophy of “Let them eat cake”? And biscuits

Now We Know Why Waitrose Took Over Duchy Originals

The Times today publishes a picture of Mark Price, the MD of Waitrose in the Royal Box for the Diamond Jubilee Concert.

It’s alright for some!

The Waitrose Obstacle Race

Last night I decided to do a bigger shop at Waitrose.  My local one at Upper Street is a bit small and doesn’t stock half the things I need. So I decided to go to the shop in the old Jones Brothers store on the Holloway Road.

Unfortunately, it is a two bus trip and I had to change from the 277 to a 271 at Highbury and Islington to complete the journey. The 271 is one of those routes that desperately needs some new buses, as like last night, some of them are a bit tired, like the Plaxton President I was on, to say the least.

But I got there about 19:30 and then spent a frustrating half-an-hour getting what I needed.  The only bread was thick-sliced, there was no gluten-free beer, I couldn’t find the smoked salmon, but there were two packets of the breakfast cereal I like. I’ve had more successful trips.

Coming back, it was another 271 followed by a 277.  I would have preferred a 393 for the first leg, as it means less walking at the change. But the bus decided to charge straight past the stop on the Holloway Road.
