The Royal Arsenal, Woolwich
As I said in the previous post, I went to Woolwich Arsenal station on the DLR. The title of this post is the main thing to see at Woolwich. Once it produced armaments and now it is being turned over to museums, housing and leisure.
I think when it is finished it will be an interesting place to live with good transport links to both East and Central London.
But not for me though as it’s south of the river. It’s like asking an Edinburgh Scot to live in Glasgow or vice-versa!
Docklands Light Railway to Woolwich Arsenal
I’ve always liked the DLR and today I took a trip to the furthest station of the railway in the South East of London; Woolwich Arsenal.
I’d been to Pontoon Dock station before to visit the Thames Barrier and also to London City Airport. But I hadn’t been as far as Woolwich. In fact the nearest I’d ever got to Woolwich was on occasional trips on the Woolwich Ferry.
Habitat for Humanity: A Despicable Scam
This looks to be a scam despite the fact that Habitat for Humanity is a registered charity. They have a donation page which allows you to donate direct with added Gift Aid, so why would they need to employ people to do this anonymously?
Hello Prospective Employee,
At HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, we work hard to improve and provide training, technical expertise and support in fund-raising to the national organizations in all the regions of the world. However, the actual work of HABITAT is carried out at the community level by affiliates that have been officially approved by the HFHI Board of Directors. The International Board of Directors (IBOD) are volunteers from around the world who share a deep concern for the problems of poverty housing.
This is demonstrated in our role as a corporate sponsor for the HAITI RELIEF PROGRAM with money raised going towards helping displaced and disabled children and their families.
We are an organization with a remarkable heritage.
You’ve got a chance to be one of our representatives and earn a commission for funds raised. This Could earn you an average of $200 – $500 weekly and as much as $2000 (TAX FREE) in a month depending on how active you are.
You can be rest assured that you WOULD NOT be required to pay any fees upfront and this won’t affect your current job earnings or disability payments in any way and you can conveniently work from your desk at home.
Private donations will be made in your name from our esteemed Voluntary Donors in your region and other parts of the world and you’ll be allowed to deduct 10 percent (10%) of the total amount on these donations. This serves as your remuneration for the great service you would be rendering in support of saving lives in the third-world countries. Balances (after the 10%) shall be required to be forwarded to the Regional Co-ordinators of the various charitable projects we are involved in around the Globe.

It just breaks all of the rules for a sensible e-mail; bad spelling, undisclosed recipients, GMail e-mail addresses etc.
But remember if you really want to give money to Haiti, would you give it to an intermediary who creamed off a percentage? No way! You’d probably do it through someone legitimate, as then they’d get extra tax relief.
It’s a scam. Ignore it.
A First Game of Real Tennis
Well not the first, but the first game since I had the stroke. In fact it was exactly five weeks since my last game.
I lost that one, just like I lost the one today. But today wasn’t disastrous as I lost the set 6-2 and was leading the second 5-1 at one point. When time ran out I was 5-4 ahead. Was I tiring? I won’t use that excuse.
Now what will be interesting is to see how my handicap progresses in future months. I haven’t checked but I think it is about 54.
Could games with a rigorous handicap system like real tennis be used to gauge how people are progressing with various brain and mental problems?
Ipswich 1 – Doncaster 1
This was a typical end-of-season match with no-one really bothered about the result. We did see a sweet goal from Connor Wickham and a rather dubious penalty, but not much else.
Except for the sun at half-time.
Is there any other major ground where you can laze on grass before a match and at half-time? So the grass is plastic, but who cares?
Can anybody explain to me who sponsors Doncaster? The logo on the shirts looked like the sort of squiggle of which a two-year-old would be very pleased.
I am a member of Facebook, but I don’t use it that often.
Why?
Am I worried about abuse and don’t hold with their refusal to put an abuse button on every page?
No! I think that an abuse button would be a mistake, as all and sundry would click it to see what happened. We actually need to educate everybody and not just children about how to be safe on the Internet. I also think that kids are the ideal people to teach vulnerable adults how to use the Internet and stay safe.
The reason I don’t use Facebook very often is simple.
I run Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7 and find that Facebook has a strong tendency to crash my machine with annoying regularity.
Virgins in More than Name
Just watching the start of the Formula One race in China.
Virgin Racing have left their car on the jacks at the start!
Isn’t that a bit fundamental?
A Real Heroic Story
Britain are not noted to be great at ice hockey, but they at least qualified for the World Championships in Slovakia.
However, they then found that they couldn’t get there because of the Icelandic volcano. But here in the UK, we’re don’t let a little dust get in our plans, so they took a coach all the way. This is from the BBC.
Great Britain won their opening game in Group B of Division One at ice hockey’s World Championships, beating Croatia.
GB made a 26-hour bus journey to hosts Slovenia after the Icelandic volcanic eruption cancelled their flight, arriving two hours before face-off.
Well done to the team and they showed that we must just get on with it.
Rumour has it, that the team have decided to sleep in the bus!
Heroic Stories?
Someone had an e-mail read out on BBC Radio 5 because they were having to take a train from Edinburgh to Nice. I’ve done most of that journey.
Here’s my reply.
A few weeks ago I had a small stroke and was banned from flying.
I went from Cambridge to Nice for a holiday and back by Eurostar and TGV. It wasn’t too bad, but TGV food is rubbish compared to Eurostar. Especially, if you’re a coeliac like me and need a gluten-free meal.
I’m off to Holland at the May Bank Holiday and booked the train, as I find short haul airlines not worth the hassle and I’m smuggling gluten-free bread mix back into the UK.
They didn’t read it out.
You may ask why I’m smuggling gluten-free bread mix into the UK. My prefered mix, Dr. Schar, is now no longer available in the UK.
